Science/Math
SCIENCE
Sun and Water Cycle
The students will learn the parts of water cycle and the importance of the Sun.
MATH
Fractions (This is about 3-4 weeks of items we will be covering.)
The students will show the relationship between a decimal and a fraction using place value models. (tenths and hundredths). The students will write a fraction with a denominator of 10 or 100 as a decimal. The students will write a decimal up to tenths or hundredths as a fraction.
The students will represent a fraction as a sum of fractions with like denominators. The students will represent an improper fraction as a sum of fractions with like denominators. The students will use concrete models to show various ways to break apart/decompose a fraction and write its corresponding number sentence. (5/2 = ½ + ½ + ½ + ½ + ½). The students will use pictures to show various ways to break apart/ decompose a fraction and write its corresponding number sentence. The students will use models to compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators (area and set models). The students will create visual models to compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators (area and set visuals). The students will use a number line to compare two fractions with different numerators and denominators. The students will use the symbols <, >, or = to represent the comparison of fractions. The students will determine the placement of a decimal on a number line (less than and greater than a whole- tenths and hundredths only). The students will determine the placement of a fraction on a number line. The students will evaluate the reasonableness of sums and differences of fractions using benchmark fractions. The students will use linear fraction models, such as fraction strips and bars, to represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. The students will use pictorial models, such as sketches of the linear fraction models and strip diagrams, to represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. The students will use what they know about decomposing fractions to add and subtract fractions with like denominators.

Recorders For Music
Dear 4th Grade students and parents,
Hooray!!!! Our recorders are finally here and will go home with students this week. Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 12, you will be responsible for bringing your recorder and your recorder book to music EVERY DAY!!!! You might also want to put together a recorder folder (binder or pocket folder) to keep any loose recorder worksheets/song sheets. Your Music conduct grade will be lowered if you forget your instrument/book more than 3 times in a 9 week grading period. Keep your recorder and book in your backpack so it’s always ready on Music days.
Students may leave their recorder/book in the music room the week they have music, but all students are expected to take their instrument home on Fridays so they can clean their instrument and practice their music. Your instrument comes with a cleaning rod, but I STRONGLY recommend throwing this cleaning rod in the trash can!!! If you use the rod to push Kleenex or paper towel into the barrel of the instrument and it gets stuck it is VERY hard to get it out. You can clean your instrument by swishing it around in a sink full of warm, slightly soapy water.
Please let me know if you have any questions. You are going to LOVE learning to play the recorder!!
