Shapes and Colors

The first few weeks of school have been a lot of fun! Everyone is doing a nice job learning the class routines and rules. The children are quickly making new friends, which is awesome to see!

This week and next week we will be learning about colors and shapes. We know that many of our students already know their colors and shapes. However, some of our younger friends are still working on these skills. For those that have already mastered colors and shapes, we will use our prior knowledge to explore colors and shapes in our environment, sort by color and shape, and make basic patterns with colors and shapes. We will also explore mixing colors to make new colors. This week, we will get out the scissors to see what we can do....snip, cut on lines, or even cut out simple shapes. We will emphasize the concepts: same/different, big/little, and/or small/medium/large.

Back-to-School Picnic!

Come join us on Thursday, September 10, from 5:30 to 6:30 for our EC Back-to-School Picnic! We will have the picnic on our EC playground. Please bring a picnic dinner to share with your family and blankets and/or lawn chairs to sit on. This is a great opportunity for you to meet the other families in the class and see who your child interacts with at school. If you plan to attend, please RSVP by Tuesday, September 8. We look forward to seeing you there!

Roadrunner Rally!

It is almost time for our 3rd annual Roadrunner Rally! The rally is a time for us to come together as a school community and raise money for our school. The donations are used to support our students in activities such as Math Bowl, our teachers with classroom supplies, and our community with PTO events. Our students will get to participate in specially-planned activities on our EC playground, and they will receive a Cumberland Road T-shirt. You will be receiving a packet of information in your child's folder this week.

Volunteer Requirements

HSE school board policy requires parent volunteers to have criminal background checks every 3 years. The background checks are completed online at the cost of $13 per person. If you plan at any time to volunteer in the class or volunteer on field trips, you must have a current background on file. Most background checks take 3 business days to process, so please plan accordingly. If you are not sure of the status of your current background check, please let me know and I can check the database to see if yours is up-to-date.

All staff and volunteers are required by law to watch the anti-bullying webinar that is available on the HSE website. Once you have watched the webinar, you must complete a survey to verify you have done so. The following link will direct you to the HSE website where you can access the background check link, the anti-bullying webinar, and the webinar survey. If you have any questions, please let me know.

HSE Illness Policy

If your child has had a fever, has vomited, or has had diarrhea, he/she must be symptom free for 24 hours before returning to school. With a fever, your child must be fever free without the use of fever-reducing medication for 24 hours before returning to school. I know this is sometimes frustrating, because you do not want your child to miss school. We don't want your child to miss school, either. However, we do not want to spread illness throughout the class. Thanks so much for your understanding.

Family Picture

We would like to put up a display of family pictures in our classroom so that the children can see and talk about their families while at school. Due to limited display space and the number of children in both classes, I am asking that each child send in only one family picture that is no larger than 4x6. If you have a digital picture that you can send via email, that would be great. If not, you can send a picture in your child's notebook. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Reminders

  • If your child will not be riding the bus, please contact transportation prior to school to let them know at 594-4117.
  • Please check your child's notebook daily for important information and/or artwork that is being sent home.
  • If you have not already sent in an extra change of clothes for your child, please do so as soon as possible.
