How to File Court Documents in NJ
For information on how to file court documents in NJ, during the pandemic, if you are representing yourself:
· Go to www.njcourts.gov/selfhelp . Under the COVID-19 Self-Help section (upper left of screen), there are links to a Filing Instructions Video, and many topics, including Emergent Matters (used for emergency requests for custody of a child or to stop visitation, and for a Sexual Assault Survivor Order of Protection).
No access to the internet or email?
Judiciary Electronic Document Submission (JEDS) system
The video explains how to use the Judiciary Electronic Document Submission (JEDS) system. The JEDS system is intended for people representing themselves (no lawyer) who need to submit a document to the court. Users can submit documents for new or existing cases.
People requesting Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs)
Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs)
DV survivors can file for Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs)
- via the police department where they live, are sheltered, or where the violence occurred.
- Currently they cannot file for them in Family Court, as it is closed.
- When the TRO is issued, police provide the victim with the family court DV email address, and collect an email address and phone number from the victim & defendant.
- Final Restraining Order (FRO) hearings are then scheduled and conducted via Zoom or a similar platform, or over the phone. TROs are good until further order of the court.
*If the TRO is denied, there is a process in place where the victim can exercise their right to speak to a Superior Court judge immediately, who will hear the same DV complaint that was just denied, and has the power to grant the TRO. (in non-pandemic times, this right existed but the victim had to go to family court).
· All criminal complaints still got to the police departments
