July 2016
From the Principal...
Our school building has gotten a little more renovation this summer. We have received new outside doors and windows. They are beautiful and I love all the natural light they let in. We are also in the process of having our HVAC completely redone. Although you may not see all the hard work that has gone into this, hopefully our teachers, staff, and students will feel it!
We couldn't open this building and have it look as amazing as it does without the hard work of our custodians: Mike, Bertin, and Leonor. If you see them, let them know what a great job they are doing.
I can't wait to see many of you at enrollment on Thursday. We will be having it in our gym from 11:00 AM-7:00 PM. There is more information included below.
Enrollment Information
This Thursday, July 28th, is Registration and Fee Payment day in the Olathe School District. The event is from 11:00am-7:00pm. Please make plans to come to the event to take care of all registration related items.
We would also encourage you to pay your fees online in advance. This can be done at MyPaymentsPlus.com and will allow you to go through faster. Please bring in a copy of your receipt if possible to help with the process. If you are paying here, we only accept cash or check.
We are also encouraging ALL parents to sign in to ParentVue when you come or before. We will have computers available on Thursday to pay fees and/or lunch fees using mypaymentsplus and sign in to ParentVue.
All parents need to access their account at the beginning of every year to reactivate the account. The first thing you will be prompted to do when logging in is to complete consents and acknowledgements for this upcoming school year. Please take time to do this by going to http://parentvue.olatheschools.com.
We look forward to seeing all of you on Thursday.
Dismissal Procedure information
Black Bob Families,
I am excited to tell you about Black Bob’s afternoon dismissal process known as CARDS – Careful and Rapid Dismissal System. Our staff is so excited to implement this process for the following reasons:
- When weather is bad, it is nice to be able to stay in your car, have your children together and ready to get in when you pull up to the building.
- The traffic moves along quickly and safely for pedestrians and drivers.
- Children who are walking home have their own supervised exit from the building so they can start their journey home.
Here is a summary of Black Bob’s CARDS System:
· Every family is assigned an “ACE Rider #” Each student will receive their backpack ACE Rider # on the first half day of school. Please leave this on your child's backpack even if they aren't a car rider.
· Parents will be given car tags with their child’s number on them. These numbers should be shown to the staff as you enter the school driveway in the pick-up line. (We recommend placing it in your front passenger window so it can be easily seen). There will be one lane for cars to enter. Cars may only enter the pick-up line heading north on Brougham and exit out onto 146th Terrace. (Since all staff are involved in the dismissal process, parents who need to visit with the teacher should plan ahead to make an appointment for after dismissal.)
All car riders are dismissed from their classroom to go to the gym where they are seated with siblings. Students watch until their number is written on the white board and then then line up in the designated area to load their vehicle in the designated green zone/pick-up area on the Northeast side of the building by they gym.
All drivers remain in their cars as staff open the car doors and assist students to load the vehicle as needed.
The line of cars moves pretty steadily once the 3:40 bell rings and the entire line will be through the drive in about 10 minutes, once we have the routine in place. IF your child has an appointment immediately following school, we advise you to come to the office and check your child out at 3:30 before the dismissal process begins.
Walkers will be dismissed from their classrooms to designated hallways. When the bell rings they will leave the school out the East Kindergarten Door, the front door, or the West door (depending on the direction they are walking). If you wish to walk your child(ren) home, you can meet them at the meeting points located on the map in the direction they are walking. For safety reasons, staff will keep walkers away from car dismissal area. Frontier Trail siblings who plan to accompany walkers home should also meet in these designated areas, not inside or in front of the building.
Bus riders will continue to report to the gym and be dismissed to the bus from there. Daycare van riders will report to the gym and be dismissed by the staff on duty there.
The packet that you will receive at enrollment includes your ACE Rider Number, which should be placed in the passenger side window when coming to pick-up your student, along with more information.
I am confident you will love the steps we take to ensure the safety of our students at Black Bob! Welcome to the 2016-17 school year, we look forward to celebrating many successes with your child(ren).

Come G.R.O.W. with us!
This year we are diving into having a "Growth Mindset" as a school wide focus. The more we learned about this, the more excited our building leadership team became. We were so excited about it, that we are making it our school wide theme for 2016-2017. It comes from the idea that at times we grow up with the idea that our character, intelligence, and creative ability can't be changed. This is called a "fixed mindset". This is when we avoid failing at all costs and think that we will never be good at certain things. Have you ever said, "Well, I wasn't good at Math, so my child probably won't be good at Math either." That is a fixed mindset.
Where a “growth mindset,” on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of "I'm not smart" but as a springboard for growing our brains and for stretching our existing abilities. Out of these two mindsets springs a great deal of our behavior, our relationship with success and failure in both academic and personal situations, and ultimately our capacity for happiness. Each month in our family newsletters we will be giving evidence of our journey, along with resources to help you at home.
