A message from Mr. Shepler:
Dear Lockerman Middle School families,
I hope everyone had an enjoyable weekend. As we begin to settle in with virtual learning, I want to continue to express concerns around interim grades. Our teachers, counselors, and administration are working hard to reach out to students and parents to encourage our wildcats to complete missing assignments. Within Google Classroom, students can access everything they need to complete their work. Our teachers are doing absolutely everything they can to be flexible during this challenging time.
If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to reach out to individual teachers or school counselors. We are here to hep and assist in any way we can to ensure your student is successful.
A few upcoming events:
- Interim Reports Mailed on Wednesday, Oct. 14th
- No School Friday, Oct. 16th
- LMS Virtual Spirit Week- Oct. 19th-23rd
- Veteran's Day Virtual Ceremony (Date and time TBD with more information to come)
Thank you.
Matt Shepler
Principal
LMS Spirit Week
Monday- Jersey/Uniform Day
* Wear your favorite sports attire or uniforms from other extracurricular activities students participate in.
Tuesday- Hat or Crazy Hair Day
* Get wacky or wear your favorite hat
Wednesday- "Remember When"sday (Throwback Day)
* We know this is an asynchronous learning day. We will be sharing pictures of LMS staff who participate in this theme day. We would love for our students to share pictures if they choose to dress up.
Thursday- Pajama Day
* Get comfortable in your favorite sweatpants or footy pajamas.
Friday- Wildcat PRIDE Day
* Wear your LMS orange and black and show your Wildcat PRIDE!!
Please remember that while many students are at home learning virtually, dress aligned with our Spirit Week themes should still be school appropriate.

Citizen's Advisory Council
* Stakeholder Communication- Between School Messenger phone calls/emails, weekly parent update newsletters, Facebook posts and our school website, the necessary information is being effectively communicated to LMS families. Weekly update newsletters can be translated and we have a translator who assists with getting School Messenger emails sent out in Spanish. We discussed adding an additional platform (Instagram) and the council determined that was not necessary. I will now begin sharing weekly parent update newsletters with all LMS students via their CCPS email accounts.
* CCPS Recovery Plan/Middle School Phase In- There is no timeline for return at the middle school and parents will have options to send students into the building or keep them at home learning virtually. We are planning ahead so that we are prepared. We are in the process of staging classrooms, determining potential transition patterns for students moving between classes, and working with custodial staff on procedures for proper sanitation. Our number one concern will always be the safety of our students and staff.
* Virtual Instruction at LMS- Both teachers and students are adapting well to virtual instruction. Our students are learning to be self starters and will hopefully become more independent learners throughout this period of time. There are concerns around student attendance within Zoom classrooms and low grades. Teachers and guidance counselors have been sending emails and making phone calls to try and make parents aware of any concerns. Our teachers are concerned about the number of students that are not completing work or engaging in Zoom instruction.
If you would like to join us, please email me directly at shepler.matthew@ccpsstaff.org for the link to the Zoom meeting. Please see the agenda below for details about topics we will be discussing.
News from the Library
- Students may request books from the library using the forms that are linked on the LMS website. Mrs. Porter has posted videos explaining how to use the forms. Your student will receive an email when their books are ready for pickup. Once they have received the email, books may be picked up at the school during school hours or, if you already receive meal delivery, they will be delivered on Wednesdays with your meals.
- All students with overdue books received an email from Mrs. Porter with the titles of the books that they still have out. Please help your student locate these books and return them to any Caroline County Public School during school hours or any public library book drop, which are available 24/7.
News from the Nurse
For students that have returned to the building, we continue to enforce simple actions of wearing our face coverings and washing our hands frequently. In addition, it is more important than ever to not send your student to school sick or not feeling well. Parents/ guardians must review and monitor their child’s symptoms and exposure risk each day before sending their students to school. Temperature screening must also occur daily prior to reporting to school. This information is available in the CCPS COVID-19 Awareness Parent/Guardian Attendance Acknowledgement Statement.
Students cannot attend school or any school activities if they are:
Exhibiting any signs/symptoms of COVID-19
Have been in close contact (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) to someone who is positive for COVID-19 or is exhibiting COVID-19 like symptoms in the past 14 days
Has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has been instructed by a health care provider or the health department to isolate or quarantine.
Students must be fever free (less than 100F) for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication to attend school.
The school nurse must be contacted if the student can not attend school due to illness.
Signs and Symptoms of COVID-19 include the following:
* New onset of cough or shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
* New loss of taste or smell
Or at least two of the following symptoms:
* Fever (100.4F or higher)
* Chills or shaking chills
* Sore throat
* Headache
* Muscle or body aches
* Nausea, vomiting
* Diarrhea
If you have any questions, please call the health room and ask for guidance. Also remember to notify the school nurse if your child is at home due to an illness. Finally, The National Association of School Nurses have developed videos to discuss face coverings, hand washing and not sending your student to school sick. The videos are in English and Spanish. They are great for all age groups of children. These videos can be found on our LMS website, www.Lockermanms.org, located under student.
LMS School Based Health Center
It’s that time of the year! Get the shot, not the flu! Influenza vaccine should now be available at your primary care doctor’s office and at your local pharmacy. Please make the time for your child, and your family to get vaccine protection against the flu!
Other ways to help prevent the spread of flu:
- Wash your hands with hand sanitizer or soap and water – after using the bathroom, before and after eating, any time you cough or sneeze.
- Cover your cough or sneeze! – Use a tissue or at least cough inside your shirt to prevent spreading germs.
- If you’re sick with a fever, stay home! – It’s okay to treat a fever with rest and over the counter medication, but a fever for 2-3 days earns a trip to the doctor.
Your School Based Health Center (SBHC) through Choptank Community Health can see your child for a mild illness and can diagnose and treat the flu if needed. The SBHC at Lockerman Middle School is open Monday and Wednesday from 7:30 am until 3 pm and on Friday from 7:30 am until 11:30 am.
