HILL HAPPENINGS
#HillHasHeart Edition - August 27, 2020
A Note from the Principal
Welcome back Hill Families,
On behalf of our Hill School family, we welcome you to the 2020 - 2021 school year. It is truly an honor to serve as your child’s principal. For those of you who don't know me...my journey in education started in 2000, when I became a second grade teacher at Gates, then transferred to Central 3 years later to teach 4th grade CAP for 5 years. After that, I took on the role as literacy specialist and worked at Gates, Siple, and Hahn Intermediate. For the past 11 years I have served as an elementary principal, this is my 8th year at Hill. With over 20 years of educational experience, our school district is truly home to me, particularly Hill as this is where I was also an elementary student many years ago! I do not view the position of principal as a job, but instead as an opportunity to lead our school to accomplish great things. My goal is to provide children at Hill with the best educational experience possible - one that will build a foundation for life-long learning.
My mission as principal is to always put kids first. My belief is that all students can learn and it is our job to support all of their unique needs. As educators, it is our responsibility to discover how each child learns in order to differentiate our instruction to support diverse learning styles. It is also really important to me that all children love school!
This year may provide challenges with procedures and logistics, but it does not have to pose challenges to relations. We are here for you.My message to everyone is to be communicative, kind, patient, and flexible. That’s what you should expect from our Hill School staff. This can be accomplished by staying in contact with your child’s teacher, reading our newsletters, and checking your child’s daily take home folder. Our expectations will be to provide clear communication and support as we partner with you to strengthen your child’s educational foundation. This form of two-way communication will help ensure the success of your child’s education and well-being.
As we look to begin the opening of our school, we have made a few changes with safety in mind. Please take time to read all of the information included in the mailing that you should receive later this week.
Prepare Your Child for School: At this time, we will be following Phase 4 of the Return to School Learning Plan that was communicated by the District earlier this month. Since we are following the “cohort” model, Hill students will not be required to wear masks within their classroom setting. All students will be required to wear a mask when leaving their classroom, all common areas and on buses. Lanyards will be provided to all Hill students to clip their masks on while not wearing them.
Communication: Hill Elementary utilizes our District web-page as a means to communicate with our families. Please visit our web page regularly at www.davisonschools.org. In addition to our web-page, we use newsletters, email and text alerts to communicate. Please always make sure we have a valid email address and cell number on file. You may contact your child’s teacher by email, telephone, or letter if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education or classroom activities.
Transportation: Please work with your child on bus etiquette and following bus rules. If transporting your child, talk to them about how to exit the car quickly and safely. Please find the Bus Routes for the AM pickup times in the link below. DCS looks forward to providing great, reliable and safe transportation to our students in the upcoming school year. Please remember that pickup and drop off times may be delayed the first week of school as routes are fine-tuned based on the amount of passengers and timeliness of runs. For questions or concerns please contact one of our friendly dispatchers at 591-0816 or Mark Fahr, Transportation Director, at 591-0813. buselementary2020busroutes.pdf
Lastly, I would like to thank you for choosing Hill Elementary as your partner in the education of your child(ren). Feel free to contact us with any additional questions that you might have.
In partnership,
Mrs. Burke, Proud Principal

Too Much Time on Your Hands?
Wonder what to do with some of the time you presently find on your hands and help Hill raise money? Take a moment to check out both Shoparoo and Box Tops for Education.
Box Tops for Education
Box Tops for Education also has a free app that helps schools raise funds. Participants are asked to snap a picture of their grocery receipt on their smartphone. Box Tops will automatically review the receipt for participating products and credit Hill Box Top earnings on line. Please take a moment to check out Box Tops for Education. Then take a moment to consider if this is something you can do to help Hill raise money during these difficult times. Every little bit can help our students and our school!
P.S. Please consider sharing this app with family and friends who do not have students in school!
Next PTO Meeting: Monday, September 14th @ 5:30. The meeting will be virtual and a link will be communicated. Stay tuned.
