A year of collaborating, communicating and connecting
Making waves in Oceanside
In 2014, we at Encore Communications - Stephanie Slater, MaryLou Wakefield and Pat Bugera - worked across the communications spectrum in research, writing, web content development, communications audit, video production, and social media outreach. We also collaborated with videographers, web designers, and musicians. It’s exciting to work in all these areas and see them come together in one project.
That was the case with the launch of workpqb.com for our Oceanside Initiatives clients. We developed marketing materials, a PowerPoint presentation, developed web content, and a 4-minute video that features young local entrepreneurs who are ‘making it work' in the Parksville-Qualicum Beach area. Know anyone who's considering living and working in this area? We're continuing to spread the word about the site to anyone looking for the west coast lifestyle and meaningful work. Read the case study on our blog.
Encore 'North'
Stephanie moved to beautiful Denman Island in March, which means we can now have Encore business meetings walking the beaches near our ‘Encore North’ office.
Between trips to the beach, Stephanie kept busy – doing a research project for the Denman Community Land Trust Association on affordable housing for seniors, writing an article about the Provincial Nominee Program for the Comox Valley Business Gazette, and joining the board of the Denman Island Memorial Society.
The society is about to launch Canada’s first stand-alone green cemetery and Stephanie helped organize a successful silent auction in November that raised over $9,400 in this community of 1,100. Her Facebook campaign generated lots of interest and support for the event.
Power of Story
She has a lot to say on the subject, particularly how story can galvanize audiences around shared values. “It was a great opportunity to share my first-hand experience with storytelling with my communications and public relations colleagues,” she said. You can watch the video.
ML shares stories on her GoingSolo blog that recently received a 'Liebster' award & her StorythatMatters blog.
Innovative Social Media
MaryLou continues to do social media outreach with Open Cinema and Connect the Docs. This is leading edge work that simultaneously engages live and virtual audiences at multi venues in Victoria, across Canada, and on Twitter and Facebook.
ML also managed the social media component of Living the New Economy Globalive 2014 that shared disruptive new ideas like the sharing economy, gift economy, indigenomics, placemaking, and marketing in the new economy. Read her STORIFY summary.
Pat in an advisory role
Pat Bugera worked in Nanaimo on a community relations contract for an international client. She also joined with several colleagues to organize a forum on women in politics. That project inspired her to return to her roots in political organization, which she put to good use on several campaigns for the October municipal election. Pat remains available as an adviser on Encore projects.
