Mrs. Rita Curl

Teacher is Tops by Tyanna James and Shaniah Bryant

I'd like to tell you a little about my nomination for the "Teacher is Tops" Award. The real reason why I was inspired to interview Mrs.Curl is because she is an amazing teacher. I love the way she comes every morning with a positive attitude and doesn't let anyone block her blessings.

1) What inspired you to become a teacher?

I believe that one of the greatest blessings this country offers is the opportunity for any citizen of any social background to rise above poverty and ignorance through the school systems. Education opens doors to the chance to work hard and become successful and independent.

2) Who was your favorite teacher in school?

My favorite teacher was my eighth grade Georgia History teacher in Waycross, Georgia--Miss Nelms. She believed in me and encouraged me. She wouldn't let me give up because she knew that I could succeed. Miss Nelms pushed all of her students relentlessly, so we sometimes called her "Coach Nelms." She is what I think a teacher should be.

3) What is one of the funniest things that has happened to you (or in your classroom) since you've been a teacher?

Once we had a group of educators from another system who came into classrooms to observe our classes. They made notes and left. I was thanking my class for how well they had behaved and performed during the strangers' visit and apologizing for the interruption when I happened to notice that one was still sitting in the back of the room.

4) How did you put up with us?

Love and the grace of God
