Mrs. Loppnow's News & Notes
Week of January 1, 2018
A Note from Mrs. Loppnow:
Hello Parents!
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed your time together during Winter Break! I've been enjoying hearing about your adventures including vacations, family visits and NEW PUPPIES!
I absolutely LOVE this time of year. The kids all seem ready to get back to work and really push themselves to do MORE and MORE. It is a fun time for me as I can begin to challenge them in ways I couldn't before. It is also a busy time of year with much to do, but so much fun to be had! I look forward to sharing our classroom adventures with you.
Enjoy your weekend!

Don't forget to send me updates from your family to share here!
A Peek into this week and next!
Writer's Workshop: This week, students worked on writing their New Year's Resolutions. We had quite a conversation about resolutions and the students shared some of YOUR resolutions with the class. Let's just say, they about had me in tears I was laughing so hard! It made me think of a quote I once heard..."If you believe half of what your child says happens at school, I'll believe half of what they say happens at home!" :-)
8/9 year old perspectives can be quite comical!
Next week we will focus on a new mentor sentence using the mentor text Verdi by Janell Cannon. Our focus will be on comparative and superlative adjectives.
Content: ANIMALS, ANIMALS, ANIMALS! With the New Year brings NEW content! We are switching our focus, in all areas, to non-fiction topics. During science, we will focus on animals and habitats. This week our focus was on identifying common traits among vertebrates and invertebrates. Next week we will discuss life cycles and animal adaptations.
Reader's Workshop: This week we have practiced identifying Non-Fiction text features such as graphs, captions, labels, and photographs. We used the big book, SALMON, to find examples of each feature. We learned a LOT about salmon and had some interesting conversations about the life cycle of these interesting creatures! Bears are thankful for salmon, as are we! See below for a video example.
