TK/Kinder STEAM 10/12

This week in STEAM our TK and Kinder Scientists kicked off a 6 week unit on weather by learning about air. Students learned that while we can’t see the air, we can spot evidence that the air is there (leaves moving in the trees, flag moving on the flagpole). We then used that evidence during an experiment with bubbles to make a hypothesis on what direction the bubbles will go. Students also explored factors that could affect the direction and longevity of the bubbles (wind, air temperature, humidity levels and building locations). We collected data from each class on how long the bubbles lasted before popping and next week can compare the longest vs shortest lasting bubbles and wonder what factors could have affected each class outcome. Students wrapped up the lesson by learning about Spirit Lake Elementary School in Iowa which is entirely powered by wind turbines. Next week in STEAM students will build their own wind powered machines with LEGO and test them with hand held fans.

Spirit Lake Elementary info:

This week in first grade STEAM we continued The Sky Above unit. We were so happy to have a bright and sunny day for our lesson on shadows. After some discussion time in the STEAM students took what they had just learned outside to trace each other’s shadows with chalk on the blacktop. They wrote their names on their shadow and were encouraged to check their chalk tracing at different times of day and report back their findings!

3rd Grade: We continued our Novel Engineering lessons. The students had to develop a solution using the Design Process to solve a problem in a fable they read. Ask your budding engineer about their solution! They were very creative!

4th Grade: We shifted from Computer Science to Structure and Function of our skulls and combined some art for the A in STEAM! Students learned about the structure and function of their skulls. Students combine science with art as they examine their own heads and make discoveries about their skull. Using their observations, they created a mask that shares characteristics with their own skull.

Garden Update!

The garden volunteers are up and running. Thank you Renee Branski and Kaitlin Mitchell for having the orientation last week with all of our garden volunteers and thank you to all of you who are volunteering to do this work. If you are interested in being the lead for this program next year please contact Kaitlin or Renee.

Around Campus!

Please have your student go through the rack. We have lots of nice items on the rack that could belong to your student.
