Notes and Updates
Hi parents,
I hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. This past week was filled with fun and different events. Our class was lucky enough to see the Hamburg Girls Choir. They sang beautifully and it was a great experience. We also watched some of our classmates participate in the swimming championship on Thursday. We are very excited to hear the results tomorrow!
In Science students started to learn more about animals. They even did a kick off event with all of first grade in which they chose an animal to learn about then got to move around the MPR based on how the animal moves, what it eats, how it breathes, and what protective covering it has. The students will be learning more about their animals by researching in books from the library and online.
In Reading, students practiced how to be reading coaches. They also worked on their fluency by reading with expression. Finally students practiced the strategy flip the sound with the teacher to help them solve hard words. Be sure to ask your student what flip the sound means to see if they remember.
In Writing, students finished their opinion books by adding stronger verbs, editing for capitals and punctuation, and publishing their books by adding a cover and illustrating. Students celebrated their work by reading it to each other in the library and displaying their books. Go to the library to see their hard work.
Also students are continuously working hard to follow the hallway and carpet guidelines in order to follow the school values of respect and responsibility.
Continue to check out the blog for fun photos and information about the new units. Please take some time to check it out, http://skeane1g.blogspot.com.
Cheers,

Give 5 a High 5 Campaign
In your child’s folder on Sunday you will find information regarding our “Give 5 a High 5” campaign. This provides an opportunity for our students to get involved in our month-long ASD Annual Fund Campaign.
We hope your child will join us in giving ASD a High 5!
Participation is simple:
1.Your child adds their High 5 statement to the hand enclosed, and if they wish they can also color or decorate it e.g. ‘I give ASD a high 5 for fun afterschool programs… or great teachers’
2. Attach 5 riyal to support ASD’s Global Citizenship Fund
3. Return in your student envelope to your teacher March 8-12
With each High 5 contribution we’ll enter your child’s name in a draw to win an Ice Cream Party for their whole class. Stop by the Elementary School Cafeteria to see our thermometer of participation grow and view the impact as our High 5 hands go on display.
100% of the money raised will go to support our ASD Global Citizenship Fund. This Fund provides financial support for individuals or groups to make a difference in their community, which may include their school, the Qatari community, or the global community. Anyone who has an idea for a project or initiative that will positively impact the community may apply for a grant. Students, teachers, parents and clubs in our school community can all apply. More information and the online application form for Global Citizenship Fund:https://sites.google.com/a/asd.edu.qa/asd-global-citizenship/
The ASD Annual Fund campaign is a targeted fundraising effort that will allow us to go beyond the essentials to provide new opportunities for our students and make ASD even better!
When you make a gift to the ASD Annual Fund, you help keep our school among the best. Contributions enable us to upgrade technology, advance athletics, promote the arts, and encourage global citizenship. Every gift counts no matter the size, as each donation demonstrates confidence in our school and ASD’s mission and values.
To make your gift or for more information on the ASD Annual Fund contact our Development Office at 4459 1500, or Jennifer Bryan jbryan@asd.edu.qa
Folders
Parents please make sure to look in their homework folders and empty them out each weekend. As a class we are working very hard on organization and would greatly appreciate your support in this matter.
ASD has a new food provider: Sterling.
A set meal with Sterling is:
Hot Set Meal: 3 hot food choices and a drink- 12 qar
Cold Set Meal: 3 cold food choices (1/2 sandwich, cut raw veggies, fruit) and a drink- 12qar
Students who get seconds will be charged for a full meal. To prevent food waste and unnecessary additional charges, we will ask students to finish a large majority of their food before getting seconds. Please go over the weekly lunch menu with your child as shown in Sahifa each Thursday to be sure your child will be satisfied by the meals offered. Alternatively, your child can bring a lunch from home. Thank you for your support to ensure your child’s nutritional needs are met in order to help support his/her learning.
