Welcome July
Close your eyes. Think about the month of July. What do you see? Fireworks bursting into spirals of color high up in the dark sky. What do you smell? Chlorine from the pool as you climb up to the top of the water slide. What do you feel? A roughness in your hands as you grasp the old tire swing rope tied to the tree in your front yard and the dirt squelching between your bare toes before you pull back to swing. What do you taste? The cool, sweet, cherry flavor of a popsicle melting in your hand while you wait for dad to finish grilling. What do you hear? Your friends calling your name from the driveway, its time to play outside. The summer often brings back nostalgic memories of days long gone. After all, for many years, July meant long, hot days with nothing to do but to play outside. Now, it too often means nothing but more monotonous days of work. For adults, three joyous months of summer vacation is a thing of the past. But that doesn’t mean we can’t remember the good old times.

Dog Days of Summer
During this time, the Sun occupies the same region of the sky as Sirius, which is the brightest star visible from any part of Earth and part of the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. This is why Sirius is sometimes called the Dog Star.

Family
When you first have children, the talk is about the challenges of parenting…the struggles of a baby waking in the night, the toddler who won’t stay in their bed, the cost of childcare, injuries from sports. Having to take off work to pick them up from school when they don’t feel well, helping them with homework, a messy house, the never-ending laundry and of course the cost to buy school clothes and packing their lunches. You watch their eyes light up on Christmas morning and try to soak in the magic of those moments. You coach them in sports, rushing to practices and ballgames and tote them all over the country to let them play the game they love no matter how exhausting or expensive it becomes. Life is just so busy that we rarely even stop to think what the end of those days looks like. In fact, it is not even something we can wrap our minds around. You go into it thinking that eighteen to twenty years sounds like a long time. Then suddenly hours turn into days, days turn into months and months into years. That little person that used to crawl up next to you in bed and cuddle up to watch cartoons, suddenly becomes this young adult who hugs you in the hallway as they come and go. And the chaos and laughter that used to echo throughout your home gets filled with silence and solitude.
You’ve learned how to parent a child who needs you to care for and protect them but have no clue how the whole “letting go” thing is supposed to work. So, you hold on as tight as you can wondering how time passed so quickly, feeling guilty that you missed something. Even though you had twenty years it just somehow doesn’t seem like it was enough.
You ask yourself so many questions. Did you teach them the right lessons? Did you read them enough books as a child? Did you spend enough time playing with them? How many school parties did you have to miss? Do they really know how much you love them? What could I have done better as a parent?
When it is time for them to go, it all hits you like a ton of bricks. Parenting is by far the most amazing experience of one’s life and at times leaves you exhilarated while others leave you heartbroken. But one thing is certain, it is never enough time.
So, for all the parents with young children whose days are spent trying to figure out how to make it through the madness, exhausted day in and day out, soak it all in. Because one day when all those crazy days full of cartoons, snuggles, sleep overs, Christmas morning magic and ballgames come to an end and you are left hoping that you did enough so that when they spread their wings......they will fly.
As we enter into July we can finally poke our heads out and see the world again. I know that throughout the world different parts are recovering from the long, long endless pandemic at different rates. For different reasons whether leadership, compliance or simply resources. Like the pandemic itself, the recovery is based on all sorts of factors that need to align. Some in our control, our choices, some not. We are left to trust making it a fascinating exercise. Sometimes I think it would be easier if I was like my Great Dane and Belgium Springer Spaniel. Always forgiving, never holding grudges. Trusting that when asked to do something it is for the best and simply just doing it. If dinner is late, they are grateful to us for finally giving it to them and forget that we are the ones who made it late in the first place.
Here in our part of the Country it seems as if more than half the population has had their first covid shot with the second being rolled out. Our state is completely reopened. Carefully, step by step, like tender spring shoots, hoping that we all now stay healthy.
This is the fulfillment of the promise of earlier months. The long months, when we did what was asked, did what was necessary but not easy. And now we reap the rewards. A freedom that smells of lilacs and irises and of freshly mowed grass and sweet peonies.
June seemed like a month of consistent work from everyone in the family. Our school district was late in dismissing this year and did not get out until the 18th of June. Our son could not wait for school to end and now reminds us of the short summer in store. We gently remind him to take every moment and relish it as if it were the longest summer ever. A reminder that we only get one chance to live this summer. He loves his Xbox but has now taken an interest in working with Patrick in growing a garden. He has grown tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, blackberries and grapes along with an array of flowers. He can tell me about determinate and indeterminate tomatoes while I have not a clue as to what he is talking about. While a lot of his garden is vicariously through Patrick it is still awe inspiring to see him understand and want to be a part of this process. We got a nice surprise as Mom paid us a visit over the early part of June and my sister paid us a visit the latter part of June.
There is always so much news.....These are exciting days.

Did You Know
Did you know the month of July starts on the same day of the month as April during common years and as January during leap years.
On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Thomas Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on, the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American Independence.
July is the warmest month in the Northern Hemisphere. Sometimes the hot, long days of July are called the “dog days of Summer”.
July 1st is the 182nd day of the year with the exception of leap year. 183 days remain until the end of the year. It is the last day of the first half of the year.
July also recognizes World UFO Day, Stay out of the Sun Day, National Fried Chicken Day along with Tiger Day. July also celebrates National Watermelon Month, National Hot Dog Month and National Ice Cream Month. Yum!
There are two-star signs which fall in the month of July. Cancer and Leo. Those born under the sign of Cancer are said to be loyal friends with great emotional depth, and those born under the sign of Leo are said to be very proud who display great leadership.
July has two birth flowers. The water lily and the larkspur. The water lily is a symbol of a pure heart, while the larkspur represents the lightness of the heart.
The birthstone of July is the ruby. It is considered by many to be the king of gems. At one point in time, it was considered to protect warriors on the field of battle if it was embedded in their armor. Nowadays, as a birthstone, it is said to protect against evil.
July’s full moon will occur on the 23rd. It is considered the full buck moon. July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It can also be known as the full thunder moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time.
If everything is growing as scheduled, then crops of corn are meant to be knee high by the fourth of July. It is also in July that crop circles started to appear in fields of corn. For the most part, Crop circles have only started appearing since the 1970s, although there have been a number of cases sporadically reported throughout history.
July is Sarcoma Cancer awareness month. This is a type of cancer that can occur in various locations throughout the body. Sarcoma is the general term for a broad group of cancers that begin in the bones and in the soft tissue. There are more than 70 types of Sarcoma and treatment can vary depending on Sarcoma type, location and other factors.
Northern Lights
Some believe the northern lights are our ancestors dancing around a sacred fire, lighting the way for us when it’s time for us to cross over from this physical world and join them.
I find the Northern Lights to be a profoundly mystical and moving experience. One of my spiritual beliefs is that life is always working in our favor, whether we can see it or not. And in my imagination the energy of life and its beneficence surrounds us in a myriad of interconnecting colored streams.

Such a good question. Love is synonymous with freedom. True, healthy love allows you the space to be yourself in full expression of sexuality, sensuality, and spirituality. Vulnerability and emotional communication come easier because love listens without judgement. Attachment is fear based. Attachment is unresolved trauma feeling at home in chaos.

Weaving the spirit of summer into your spiritual practice
We hope you are all glowing from inside to out during this wonderful time of summer we are being blessed with. It seems to be a time when neighborhoods and families come together, whether to enjoy the comradery of a baseball game, or the wonderful weather and all the opportunities that it brings to get outside and have some fun together. With all this positivity about, and so many appealing options of things to do, you may have noticed that you have less time or inclination for your normal daily spiritual practices. When it comes to your spiritual practice, summer can also be a great time to go with the flow, do what feels good, and have some fun with it.
Spiritual practice does not have to be rigid; you do not have to follow a set pattern or formula. You may want to do some yoga in the park, read on the beach, dance around your garden to your favorite song, or simply take a quiet stroll around a lake. Doing whatever feels nourishing and good for you, is a part of your spiritual practice. Awareness is the key. Do whatever makes you feel good, but remember to add some intention around it, to notice what you are doing and why, and then take a few moments to feel gratitude for whatever that was and whatever it brought you. It could be as simple as, today I am choosing to take a long bike ride in the forest, because seeing the sun dapple through the trees, and feeling the breeze on my skin makes me feel free and refreshed, and I notice afterwards how the niggling thoughts I had about work that day, have shifted into a fresh energy and some brand new creative thoughts about the best next action to take. By doing this you will notice much more of how your summer activities have nourished and enhanced your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Summer can bring with it a fresh new sense of optimism, positivity, get up and go. So, make the most of it! This is a time to try some new things. Is there a new activity you have been wanting to do, a new work out plan, even trying a new water sport, or is there a new more nurturing daily routine you have been meaning to get going with? The summer is a great time to get started on new things. It is a great time to start putting into action your vision for your life and well-being. All the things you did not have the opportunity or energy to start when the nights were long and dark, and the weekends dull and gray. Do not waste time with judgement as to what you have or have not done, just enjoy the moments you have now and make the most of them. You can also see this as setting yourself up with the best foundation to carry on your newfound hobbies, or spiritual practices when the nights start drawing in again.
Summer is all about enjoying yourself, and that goes for your spiritual practice too. But we can still find ourselves getting triggered, or stuck in our thoughts, as normal life continues and has a habit of sneaking up and spoiling our sense of inner ease. It is important to still maintain a regular spiritual practice as it will help you to have something in place to shift back into your summer groove as quickly as possible. But that does not mean it has to be a big exercise or take away from enjoying your summer days. Choose a practice that is easy for you to practice at any time, like gratitude. Let’s face it, it is not that difficult at this time of year to find things to be grateful for. Washing that dries outdoors in a matter of hours and smells fresh for days, playing in the freshly cut grass in the park with your family, a chirpy smile from someone in the grocery store. The opportunities to feel grateful are so abundant, all you need to do is take a few moments each day to notice and acknowledge them. A few minutes journaling in the garden during the morning or evening hours can be a great way to enjoy this practice, and really turn up the temperature on your awareness and enjoyment of this wonderful time of year.

Ever had that morning where nothing went as planned. The alarm didn’t go off. Your late getting the kids to school and then to top it off the car in front of you rolls back into you. Even though there is no damage it completely wrecks your mood. Once it seems to calm down you realize after you have arrived at your Drs appointment that you are an hour early. You even blame it on the day of the week with that usually being a Monday.
Unfortunately for me it does happen. After a rough start I sometimes stop at a favorite Coffee shop and grab a Chai Tea. As I sit under my gray cloud, my server chats a bit but what mostly caught my attention was the smile. Regardless of that person's day they were positive and smiling the entire time. I couldn’t help but smile back. I finish my Chai and head to my appointment equipped with a grin on my face, feelng as though I’ve slipped on a pair of rose-colored glasses. Today’s lesson? It turns out that when I smile, the world smiles back.
Scientists and spiritual teachers alike agree that the simple act of smiling can transform you and the world around you. It is said that a smile is contagious. It can make us appear more attractive to others. It lifts our mood, as well as the moods of those around us and can even lengthen our lives. Each time you smile, you throw a little feel-good party in your brain. The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness. You’re actually better-looking when you smile. When you smile, people treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed, and sincere. Each time you smile at a person, their brain coaxes them to return the favor. You are creating a symbiotic relationship that allows both of you to release feel-good chemicals in your brain, activate reward centers, make you both more attractive, and increase the chances of you both living longer, healthier lives.
My morning started as a complete mess. Anyone in my shoes would have been frowning by the time they hit that coffee shop. We can’t always control what happens to us, but I am 100 percent confident that gracing your face with a grin can seriously change your internal and external experience. Your smile is something that should be worn often, so make it a priority to surround yourself with people, places, and things that brighten your day. Vow to be the positive, happy person in your group of friends. Watch funny movies and be sure to look people in the eye and show them your pearly whites. The world is simply a better place when you smile.
