2023 CLOSE UP TRIP TO D.C.
Is your student interested in attending the November 2023 Close Up trip to Washington, D.C.? There will be an informational parent meeting on Wednesday, February 15th, at 6pm in the CHS Library. Parents of confirmed travelers should bring copies of their student’s state ID and health insurance card to the meeting. Please email thornton_stephanie@asdk12.org with any questions.
ENGINEERS WEEK!
As part of Anchorage Engineers Week, the UAA College of Engineering is excited to offer a two-night event, Journey into Engineering at UAA, on Monday, February 13 and Thursday, February 16, 6-8 pm, in the Engineering & Industry Building. This event is intended for high school students interested in pursuing engineering, and their families. Students can explore opportunities at UAA, meet engineering professors, and check out research labs.
Each night, we will highlight specific departments and offer the following activities:
- Monday, February 13, 6-8 pm
- Civil Engineering – Dr. Scott Hamel, Alaska’s 2021 Engineer of the Year, will demonstrate an earthquake simulation using a shake table.
- Mechanical Engineering – Dr. Raghu Srinivasan, one of Alaska’s leading experts on corrosion chemistry, will demonstrate the research equipment in the Materials Testing Lab.
- Project Management – LuAnn Piccard, a former longtime executive at Hewlett-Packard, will demonstrate project management thinking through a construction game.
- Admissions Office – Admissions counselors will present on important need-to-know information about tuition, scholarships, on-campus housing, and more.
- Thursday, February 16, 6-8 pm
- Computer Science & Engineering – Dr. Sebastian Neumayer, an expert on cryptocurrencies and disaster preparedness for networks, will demonstrate field-programmable gate array implementation of a morse decoder and pong game.
- Electrical Engineering – Dr. Jens Munk, an expert on electromagnetic modeling, will demonstrate the research equipment in the Electrical Engineering Lab.
- Geomatics – Dr. Caixia Wang, a remote sensing expert, and Dr. Gennady Gienko, whose research has included modeling a moon of Saturn, will demonstrate the technology used in geomatics.
- Machine Shop – Corbin Rowe, the machinist for the College of Engineering, will lead a tour through the machine shop, showing off fabrication equipment and ongoing projects.

At UAA, we understand that becoming an engineer is a daunting goal. But it is also incredibly exciting, and students can rest assured that UAA is here to support them on their journey.
ACTIVITIES UPDATE
Congrats to all our sports and Congrats to our Hockey Team for finishing First place in the regular conference season. Hockey Regions start today! Chugiaks' first game for the region tournament is Thursday at 7:15 pm at the MAC center. Student activity stickers are not accepted for Region or State competitions. The Hockey State Tournament starts February 9th.
With busing back in full swing, students need to ride the bus home every day, unless their practice is right after school. The school is not open for students just waiting around for their rides. If you need to make arrangements please contact the school. There is a study hall available Monday through Thursday from 2:45-3:45 pm.

SENIORS- Jostens orders are starting to arrive in the Activities office. Jostens will be at Chugiak on January 31st during lunch to hand out orders. If you have not ordered your Cap and Gown, please go to Jostens.com to order.
BLUE PASSES FOR LEAVING CAMPUS
- FUTURE BLUE PASSING- Parents & Families, due to the new 'Modified Bell Schedule' beginning January 30th through March 9th, we request that if your student needs a Blue Pass to leave campus that you call it in to the Attendance Office as early as possible. This will help our office get your student out the door and on time to their appointments. Please call the Attendance Office directly at 907-742-3069.
COLLEGE ADMISSION WEBINARS
College Admissions Webinar for 10th & 11th Grade Parents and Students
The Chugiak High School counseling department has partnered with Frontier Tutoring to deliver a college admissions webinar for 10th and 11th grade parents and students. Parents must register for the webinar in advance – see instructions below. The webinar will cover SAT/ACT testing strategy (including test-optional policy updates and a primer on the new digital SAT), the college list building process, how to develop your college application essays and obtain strong letters of recommendation, and financial aid/scholarship information relevant to juniors and seniors. Chugiak High School counselors will be online to answer Chugiak/ASD-specific questions. If you are unable to make the live webinar, please register for the webinar and you will receive a recording of the event.

PRACTICE ACT & SAT TESTS FOR 11TH GRADE STUDENTS
11th Graders: Sign up for a free practice SAT® and ACT®, brought to you by the Chugiak High School counseling team and Frontier Tutoring. After taking a full-length proctored practice SAT/ACT, you will receive a detailed score report and access to individualized feedback on your performance, including test-optional strategy. The practice SAT is March 4, and the practice ACT is April 8. If you can’t make these dates, you can choose alternate dates on the website. Space is limited, so register early. Note: Currently, we recommend practice SAT/ACT testing for 11th graders. For current 10th graders, Frontier Tutoring will begin offering practice tests for the new digital SAT this summer.

Chugiak Cheer will once again be hosting our annual Mini Mustang Cheer Camp. This year, Camp will take place Feb. 7-9 from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm in the Chugiak High School Cafeteria. Free and Reduced-price (F&R) Meals have returned, which means families with students attending Chugiak must apply for F&R meal benefits this year. Please visit the Student Nutrition website (https://nutrition.asdk12.org) for more information and to complete an online application. The website includes instructions to help parents complete the online application.
STUDENT ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS COVERAGE
This is a reminder that Anchorage School District does not provide medical coverage for student injuries. However, ASD has made available an option for families to purchase a low-cost student accident insurance program.
