PANTHER PRESS
March 14, 2019
West Families: It looks like spring is finally here along with lots of melting snow and wet playgrounds. Please pack an extra set of clothes, including undies and socks, in your student's backpack so they have their own clothes to change into should they land on the soggy, wet or muddy ground. THANKS!
Healthy regards,

Second Graders and FFA Pals
Ice Cream Math for Third Graders
Third grade students have been practicing their multiplication facts for the past few weeks. Students are motivated to learn their facts by passing a one minute timed test and coloring each fact's ice cream scoop. Third graders will get to enjoy their well deserved ice cream after the unit!
6th Grade Science
If the pieces of the project go like the students would like them to go, there would be little challenge. Most of the groups had students who were speaking with each other, suggesting new things to try, and encouraging each other.
As always, the groups who have someone who likes to "take over and control" a project, were challenged to be being more of a "team" player.
Skills take time to develop and get better. Finally, several new "twists" were added to the project. First, the students learned how to read the voltage on a multi-meter. This skill was used when the solar panel was connected with the multi-meter, the students could actually "see" what was the best angle to place a solar panel to get the most energy from the sun. Since some days are cloudy, solar cars don't work very well. The students really took to the challenge to power their cars with battery power only.
It is TRULY AMAZING when the students come up with ideas and suggestions by themselves. When they don't receive an easy answer, they are forced to return to their groups to problem solve together.
From the beginning of the school year, these students have developed many positive and useful skills like trying to work and help each other, instead of just talking.
Here are some pictures showing the students using their "noggins" to problem solve.
8th Grade Social Studies
8th grade social studies students are currently exploring the causes and consequences of western expansion. From the allure of gold in California to the horrors of the Donner Party being trapped in the Sierra Nevadas the 8th graders are researching the positives and negatives of Manifest Destiny. Western expansion shaped the U.S. many different ways and students are realizing just how different regions of the nation were impacted by this life changing event. Eventually, class focus will change towards how westward expansion impacted slavery and how it contributed to the Civil War.
