A Message from Mrs. Penrod
We are having another exciting week of learning. And, we are thrilled to be welcoming back Kindergarteners on Monday. While many routines will be different than what we typically do in school, having classes learning on campus is something we have been waiting for since March! We can’t wait to put all our hours of planning into action for our Kindergarteners as we continue to hope for our older students’ return to campus in the near future as well.
Afternoon Schedules: We have been receiving questions around our afternoon schedules including, Choice Time and Flexible Access Time. The afternoon activities are included on your child’s Canvas schedule as a part of the school day. Afternoons are a teachers’ chance to provide students opportunities to engage in activities outside of Reading/Writing/Math. The district schedule mentions several options in the definition of Choice Activities. Your child’s teacher is determining the activities that will be on the schedule for the afternoon.
Principal Snack and Chat: I would love to have a conversation with you. If you are available, please join me on Wednesday morning at 10 am via this Zoom link: https://monroe-wednet.zoom.us/j/87989779270
Thank you for all you do!
Warmly,
Stephanie
Digital Learning News
As our students have been learning online, it was important to start the school year with a focus on Digital Citizenship. Staying safe, acting responsibly and being respectful were the main ideas in the lessons taught in DL during the month of September.
As we move into October, we will take a look at which topics will be the focus of DL this year, and ask for feedback from students on what topics are of most interest to them. We will also emphasize the importance of perseverance and not giving up, even when tasks become difficult or frustrating.
While we have not had assignments that are submitted in the same way as regularly assigned classwork, I ask that students participate in whatever platform is being used to provide feedback for each lesson (e.g. Padlet).
If you have questions about an assignment, please feel free to contact me at glazee@monroe.wednet.edu.
Warm regards,
Beth Glaze

October is Bullying Prevention Month!
If we were in school we would be participating in activities focused on understanding what bullying is and how we can work together to stop it! Right now we are learning from home and social distancing in our small circles. Many of our families have several students learning at home and can add stress to sibling relationships. Our students are also missing social interaction with friends and can use many skills to be kind to each other.
Mrs. Ervin is missing her students so much! I am thinking about them everyday and have enjoyed reconnecting at our Zoom morning meetings. Thank you parents for working so hard with us to keep our kids learning. I have included some resources below that I think will be helpful during this journey.
Kindergarten comes back in-person Oct. 12th
Even as we start to fall into distance learning routines, we are thinking and planning for what is next. The district announced this week that Kindergarteners will be returning to our buildings on October 12th! We look forward to seeing our youngest learners in person, and begin thinking ahead towards welcoming other grades as well.
As Dr. Blasko shared in his email, “In alignment with guidance from the Snohomish County Health District, we will wait at least three weeks after our developmental preschool and kindergarten students return before bringing any additional grade levels back for in-person learning. If, at that time, COVID-19 activity in the schools and community remains stable or continues to improve, then we will proceed with bringing additional elementary grades back.” Here at Salem Woods Elementary we are preparing our safety measures and excited to have our students back for in-person learning!
Students returning to school will need to have a completed Attestation Form. Students who ride the bus will turn in their Attestation Form directly to the bus driver. If you are a car drop kindergartner, your student will not be allowed to exit the vehicle until a form is is completed with the parent and a staff member. Please to be sure to have a completed form for your student each day. Student Attestation Form (English) or Formulario de declaracion para estudiantes del Coronavirus(Spanish)
Virtual Curriculum Night
Oct. 22nd is Curriculum Night
This year our Curriculum Night will look a little different. Staff and grade levels will be putting together videos to share about what learning looks like. We will release these videos on October 22, and you may view them from the comfort of your home. We hope that you take a few minutes to learn more about all the amazing things we’re doing here at Salem. After watching the video, we ask for you to reach out to your child’s teacher or our office to help answer your specific questions.
Parent -Teacher Conferences
Our Parent-Teacher Conferences this year are the week of Oct. 26-30th. Watch for more information on schedule details soon. Conferences are an opportunity for individual student updates and questions.

Transitional housing (a program going from homeless to independent living usually within 24 months).
Staying in an emergency shelter.
Children and youth abandoned in hospitals.
Living in cars, train stations, public spaces, parks, abandoned buildings, and other substandard housing.
Runaway youth, or children whose parent will not permit them to live at home.
