Weekly Update 4.24
Pan American Academy Charter school
Greetings Pan American team!
I am excited to be writing our newsletter greeting this week. Soon we will hear each other’s voices again during our first team call. I have attached a picture above that shows the impact I hope each of our corps members have on their students this year. The first picture is a story I received this week from a student. She made it on her own at home, which makes me feel proud to know that I have helped to inspire a love for literacy in her. I hope all of our students deepen their love for literacy this summer. Also, I have attached two notes I keep next to my desk that say “I love you,” in English and Spanish. I hope all of our corps members receive letters of appreciation in some form like this in the coming months.
All my best,
Miranda

DACA & LGBTQ Calls [2-5 min action by 4/26 COB – **Note first call option is 4/26, 7:30pm]
We are excited to share that there will be some central staff training this spring to increase our awareness of the DACA and LGBTQ communities. These trainings are optional but highly recommended. We know they are short notice and you all are busy so if you can make it, it will be great to be on the call with other staff live, and if not we will be sure to share materials from the calls for you to review. You can read more about each of the calls in the attached DACA and LGBTQ Staff Calls Overview document (attached to the email)
§ Calls are at the following times (two different time options for each topic):
o DACA: 4/26 and 5/3, 7:30-9pm
o LGBTQ: 4/28 and 5/5, 7:30-9pm
§ Please sign up for one of the DACA and one of the LGBTQ Calls DOODLE Link to RSVP for DACA and LGBTQ Calls.
Clearance Paperwork and Residence Hall Visitor Requirements [Action Required by 5/22 COB, 30-120 mins]
All staff members working in schools and/or living on site at Temple will need to complete the clearance paperwork required by our school sites and Temple University (TU) for legal and safety reasons.
This year staff* will be submitting paperwork to two separate entities (*see note below about visitor paperwork as well):
§ To Tori Hines, in hardcopy, for paperwork required by school sites
§ To Temple University (TU), via their electronic portal
Summary (additional details below and in the attached):
Next Steps
1. Open the attached spreadsheet “Staff Clearance Paperwork 2016”
2. Read the Guidance tab, particularly the yellow shaded sections
3. Find your name in the other tab and note the paperwork you need to submit
4. Head back to the Guidance tab for detailed instructions starting on row 7
5. Mail hardcopies to Tori at the address noted by 5/22
6. Submit electronic PDF files of your paperwork to Temple directly by 5/22 (directions coming in May as they finalize their system)
Temple Residence Hall Visitors: New Process for 2016
§ The paperwork listed as required for Temple is also required of any adult visitor to the residence hall this summer. This includes short term visitors and as well as non-overnight stay visitors (same protocol as Morgan Hall last summer).
§ For any visitors to the residence hall this summer, we recommend having them complete the background checks this spring.
§ A different set of paperwork applies to any minors visiting the residence hall. Please email Louis.Gorton@teachforamerica.org for minor paperwork information.
Background Information and Context
§ Due to new legislation passed in January 2015 in Pennsylvania, university residence halls housing minors must require all attendees to submit background checks in advance of their arrival.
§ 1300 Residence Hall will house minors as we are lucky to have our entire institute community under one roof again this year and several members of our staff and about 5% of our corps have children that they’ll have with them at institute.
§ All staff are welcome to have visitors this summer, provided the visitor submits the paperwork to Temple no less than 10 business days in advance of their arrival, and provided that the visitor is accompanied by you at all times (family housing is an exception to this policy as family housing residents are considered attendees, rather than visitors).
§ While this paperwork represents a change to Philly Institute housing structures, they still permit us to have guest privileges, while also helping instill another layer of safety and security in the residence halls.
