Estacada HS Virtual School Days

March 20, 2020 - English & Espanol Version

Updated Virtual School Days

These are very difficult and unprecedented times for our nation and our community. The current situation is very fluid with changes happening at a rapid pace. The Estacada School District will continue to provide a quality education for our students while we are currently shut down. Our current virtual school days were only designed for short-term school closures. With mandates that require the long-term shut down of school buildings, we will be improving how we deliver instruction moving forward so it is sustainable for the long-term.

We have listened to the input we have received from many of you with the difficulties of online learning and believe we are addressing those concerns. As we make improvements to our online program we realize that there will still be a need to make continuous improvements. However, I believe we are leading the way in the state of Oregon for moving from a brick and mortar school to providing online education while supporting our students.

To ensure that our staff has the technological capabilities to deliver prolonged online instruction while providing support to students, we will be offering professional development to them on March 30 & 31. Our virtual online school will resume on Wednesday, April 1st.

Below you will find the adjustments that will be taking place.

Virtual School Days Schedule - Starting April 1, 2020

For those students who thrive in school with a more traditional model, we will have times when they can/should be working on their classes. For others who excel at working at their own pace, they can continue to do so.

We realize that having 7 online classes a day can be difficult so we are moving to a block schedule. Students will have Periods 1-4 on Monday and Wednesday and Periods 5-7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be no school on Fridays as we will give teachers that time for collaboration in their Professional Learning Communities, develop online curriculum, and update the gradebook for assignments that have been submitted by Thursday.

Teachers will be available during their class period as well as office hours at the end of the day. You can email them or choose to have online video meetings via Zoom or Google Hangouts. Teachers will send out their access codes for Zoom meetings.

Attendance

Attendance will obviously be a bit different than traditionally done. For a student to be considered in attendance of a class, two-way communication between teacher and student/family must be made. This can be through an email, a video/chat conversation, or submission of an assignment that was assigned that day. The communication needs to occur within 48 hours/2 school days of the virtual school day.

Asistencia

Special Education

For our students who are receiving special education services from Ms. Dych and Mr. Johsnon, and Ms. Bateman there will be a much higher level of support. Students will meet during their scheduled class times via online video so they can be supported with individualized instruction. For students who are unable to meet during their scheduled class times or may want additional time, they will also be available in the afternoons as well.

Class of 2020 Senior Students

At this time, the Oregon Department of Education is looking at determining how the school closures will be affecting graduation and credit requirements. ODE says they will have an initial plan early next week. We will keep you informed.

For our seniors and their parents and guardians, I realize how these uncertain times can weigh on all of you as your high school education comes to a close this spring. We are working hard to support you and will communicate any changes that come from ODE that may affect our senior students.

Currently, our graduation events are still scheduled, but with our fluid situation, there may be a need to make changes in the near future.

Advanced Placement Testing

Good news for those of you who are taking Advanced Placements classes. The College Board, who is in charge of AP, has decided to let students take online tests at home this year. There will be two dates that the tests can be taken. The test dates will be posted by April 3rd.
