Pence To Use LanSchool In Classrooms
Pence Families-
We are excited to let you know that we will be piloting the use of LanSchool classroom management software starting this week. This is a great resource for teachers to use to guide and manage student Chromebook use in their classrooms. When students log into their chromebooks in the classroom, they will be prompted to share their screens with their teacher. The software will allow teachers to keep students on task, check on their progress during classroom projects, manage which websites they should be on, and provide instructional feedback on projects as they can monitor student use while in their classrooms. This feature can only be used within the school (while on the school network) and will not be operational outside of the school/in the home. We have been utilizing it in our 8th grade ITF (computer) classrooms this school year and it has proven to be a valuable tool. Our teachers will have various levels of comfort utilizing this software at first, so it may not be implemented by all teachers for now.
Below are a couple of FAQ's for students:
Can school personnel (teachers, administrators, technology staff) see my screen when I am at home?
No. Lanschool ONLY works when your Chromebook is on the school's network. No monitoring or control outside school is possible. (Internet filters, as always, do remain in place when you use your RCPS Chromebook at home.)
Students, teachers, administrators -- ALL RCPS employees abide by the same privacy rules. There's no expectation that any information on an RCPS device is private. Important to understand is that accounts are typically only searched when there are compelling reasons to do so. During class, you are expected to share your screen when prompted.
Why are we using this?
This is a tool that helps teachers in two ways: 1 - assists classroom management and 2 - provides extra tools to use during classroom instruction.

Expanding Your Horizons Conference
Dear Students, Parents, and Friends of EYH:
Thank you for your past involvement or interest in the Expanding Your Horizons Conference (EYH) at James Madison University. Please save the date for this year’s conference: Saturday, March 21, 2020
EYH is an annual STEM conference designed for girls in grades 6-8. Please note the change in grade levels for this year’s conference. The EYH conference includes hands-on workshops on a broad range of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics topics, keynote talks, a science demonstration, and a lunch with JMU students majoring in STEM. EYH also includes workshops for accompanying adults. The conference is free, but advance registration is required for all attendees.
Due to the high demand for the conference,, EYH will utilize an online lottery system for registration for individuals and small groups again this year. The lottery will open on the EYH conference website on Friday, February 14th. Students will be able to enter the lottery as individuals or as part of a group of 2 to 6 students. You will receive another email with full registration details in early February, or you can find that information now on the conference website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh.
Virginia public schools and official, recognized community organizations in Virginia that want to bring an organized, large group of students to EYH are eligible to apply to bring a group of 10-20 students to the conference. An application form is required for large groups, and the deadline for these applications is Friday, February 7th. The application form and more information about the large group application process is posted on the EYH website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh
We appreciate your help in spreading the word about EYH. Anyone who is interested in receiving email updates about the conference can join our email list using the link on the front page of the EYH website http://www.jmu.edu/mathstat/eyh.
