If I Should Die Before I Wake
By: Han Nolan
Book Summary:
Imagine growing up in a time where the Nazis still roamed around and had complete control over the Jews. In this book a girl named Hillary is one of the Nazis. Hillary is completely against Jewish people. That is until she gets into a motorcycle accident in the middle of a Jewish town, put into a Jewish hospital, and is put under the care of a Jewish nurse. While Hillary's in the hospital she starts to realize that she can't see or move anything, but she can hear what's happening around her. It was like she was in a coma.
After a while of trying to figure out what happened to her and where exactly she is, Hillary started to become tired and drifted off into sleep. As Hillary slept her mind started to drift off to places it had never been before. Hillary started to remember things that never actually happened to her. The memories she was having were from a Jewish girl named Chana. As you read you learn things that Chana and other Jews went through. Also, you see this time in history from two very different perspectives.
3 Facts I learned:
- Towards the end of the war the Germans ran out of time to gas the Jews that were in camps before they burned the bodies. With the lack of time, they decided it would be easier and more efficient to burn all the Jews in camps at once, while they were still alive.
- While Jews were at concentration camps they were tattooed on their arm with a number that would from now on be their name.
- Every morning at the concentration camps they took roll call. Roll call could last anywhere from 2-8 hours. On days that people didn't show up to roll call or people went missing it could last all day.
