Classroom Donations - (inside recess)
Because of our inside recess this past week, I was reminded of just how creative our kids can be when they have the inspiring resources to build and construct. During this 1st inside recess for this year this week, we took inventory of the inside resources we use to be productive for inside play, and have decided to come up with a small list of things that we have agreed upon could help us make the most out of our inside recesses to come. Please click the link to learn about the items on our wish list for inside recess resources.
Why Writing Workshop? By the Partnership for Inquiry Learning
You may be wondering why we are using writing workshop for or writing instruction model. This week's topic about writing workshops from an article by the Partnership of Inquiry Learning may help answer some of your questions.
"Writing workshop increases confidence in writing ability"
Students develop a sense of craft in writing workshop. They read like writers to see what strategies other authors employ to effectively convey meaning and emotion, shape and organize material, make texts lively and compelling. As thoughtful, deliberate researchers, students then apply this knowledge across texts, genres and subject matter. Because
workshop teaching focuses on improving each writer’s breadth and depth of understanding of craft, students acquire the tools necessary to improve not only the project in hand but also future writing endeavors.

Library Volunteers
Library volunteers are needed to help with shelving and checking in books in our TCE Library. Volunteering in the library is fun and the schedule is flexible! If you are interested in volunteering, please reach out to Mrs. Hopper, TCE Librarian (lhopper@hse.k12.in.us).
*A safe visitor background check is required for all school volunteers. For more information on background checks, visit https://www.hseschools.org/services/other/school-safety/visiting-and-volunteering.

We Are Learning...
Reading
In reading this week we learned/reviewed the following skills/ concepts when reading non-fiction: to anticipate challenging keywords about a topic and identifying non-fiction keywords to learn more about a topic. This week we learned that non-fiction readers predict keywords an author may use in her/his book, in an attempt to prevent us from getting stuck on an unfamiliar word about the book's topic. We also practiced identifying how authors use and describe keywords in varying ways.
Writing
This week in writing we reviewed the following concepts/skills: identify and adding pertinent information to our subtopics and using expert words to grow our readers knowledge about our topic. 1st we started our week by rereading our books as readers to identify if our pages needed more information. We used questions that started with who, what, when, where, why, and how to support our practice in writing comprehensive, or all-inclusive, non-fiction texts. After asking ourselves questions about what information our audience would want to know about our existing texts, we then answered those questions to give our readers the richest reading experience we could. Lastly, this week we used expert words, or words or terms specific to our topics, to share more about our topics. We did this by creating a web of words that each related directly back to our topic. We used this web to implement our expert words into our writing. We also focused on "hooking our reader" with a powerful lead!
