Electrostatics

Speakers

What are they?

They are speakers that use electrostatics to work using positive and negative charges to amplify the sound. Sir Oliver Lodge created the first one in 1898
Electrostatic Loudspeaker (ESL) Technology - MartinLogan

How they work

The electrostatic speakers are made with three sheets of metal. A very thin one in the middle has a positive charge and the two sheets on the outside are opposite charges. When the speaker is plugged in and turned on the middle piece is attracted to the piece of metal on the outside. When it is attracted to the first one, the other piece of metal will switch charges with the other one which causes the middle piece to be attracted to it. This amplifies the sound because it moves at very high speeds.
