The Roanoke River head waters begin in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is in eastern Montgomery County. The Roanoke River Mouth is the Albemarle Sound, its off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia.

The Roanoke River basin's total miles are 2,213 and square miles are 3,493.
