South Union Rail
Responsible, Respectful, and Ready to Learn
A Note From Dr. Szakacs
Dear Parents and members of the SU school community:
I hope this edition of the Parent Newsletter finds you well and enjoying the spring season. As you know, we have about four weeks remaining in the school year. This school year has brought a full plate of exciting memories, fun times, and a lot of teaching and learning. We have so much to be proud of and this school year and it all begins with your support of South Union.
During the month of May, your child will be experiencing a lot of year-end testing, prep work for the next grade level, and finishing the school year on a positive note. In addition, some grade levels will be going on field trips; visiting Ja Biz Town, and completing school related projects.
You may have noticed a few construction projects happening at SU. We recently had a new section of fence put on the south side of the playground area. We are also having new basketball hoops installed on the playground so that students can shoot and play full court games. We anticipate that community members will also play basketball games because of the new setup.
A big shout out to SU Parents and Community members for supporting the April Family Pancake breakfast and Book Fair. We had a great turnout for both and we are so happy to see families enjoying quality family time with their children.
So long…as you know, I will be moving on to a new leadership position within the District this summer. I once again want to thank all of you for supporting teachers, students, and me over the years. I will miss all the relationships that I have formed with many of you and I wish you and your family nothing but the best moving forward. The pleasure to serve and represent South Union has been all mine. I will dearly miss the students, faculty, and staff for all their dedicated effort and time to make a difference in the lives of our youth.
Important calendar dates:
· Fifth Grade Recognition Ceremony – May 24 @ 9:00 a.m. Location – gym.
· Memorial Day – May 27 – no school for students or staff
· Last day of school – May 30 @ 11:25 a.m., school dismissal time.
Warmest regards,
Dr. Bill Szakacs
“Find something good in everyone”
As we move into the final stretch of the 2018-19 school year a word that comes to mind is change. We all know that change happens. How we handle and discuss change influences how our students are able to navigate change. Many of them are looking ahead to changing teachers, changing classes and some changing schools in the fall. Something I try to remind them with all of their relationships is to find something good in everyone. As students learn to navigate challenging relationships and even those that come easy, we can all learn something from each other. If we choose to own our mindset and open our ears, we can often see and hear good from those around us, even if we are completely different.
As adults we can model this by pointing out when we have experienced a challenge with another person, but we can find something about the person that is good, maybe they are a good parent, a good listener, or maybe they are generous with their time. We can help our children to learn this by asking them questions about how they resolve conflict, how they express or manage their emotions and then identifying someone who does these things well. It’s an important skill for us to teach our students especially as change is coming, to look for the good in circumstances and to find something good in everyone.
I wish you all well!
