To Earn money, Bessei and her brother began singing on the streets as a duo. While she sang and Danced, her brother acccompanied her on the guitar. In 1904 her oldest broher, Clarence, left home and joined a small traveling troupe owned by Moses Stokes. If she would have been old enough, she would have gone with him. he retruned in 1912 to offer her an audition with his managers.
