AUTHENTIC LEARNING SCIENCE FIELD TRIP
FFA PETTING ZOO
The following article was submitted by
Tristan McGuire, Chapter Reporter
On May 11th the Fairview FFA hosted its annual petting zoo. This event is conducted by bringing in animals and other programs of interest to the Fairview Agriscience facility. This popular day is an opportunity for the public, particularly children, to come to the FFA classroom and experience agriculture from a hands-on point of view. Throughout the day, the entire Fairview Elementary student body are able to joyfully experience first-hand interaction with a variety of traditional livestock and are also educated about the animals and other agricultural programs by the Fairview FFA members. The event is designed to be fun but also gives visitors the chance to learn about the variety and numerous components of agriculture and the environment. This year there were 19 different animals brought to this hands-on event and all of the students that arrived were taught about the animals and had a chance to pet the animal. In one case the students were allowed to walk the animals around the courtyard. In the classroom segment younger students learned about soil and were able to make crafts with the FFA members assisting them. The older students were able to learn how a small engine works and educated about tractor safety. Above all the students and FFA members had a very educational time participating in the annual Fairview FFA petting zoo.
