Pickerington Elementary Staff "Shout Out"

Has a Pickerington Elementary staff member gone above the call of duty to ensure your child has had an amazing day, week, month or even a year? 😁 Please take a moment to let us know by completing the form below. Pickerington Elementary is very fortunate to have an outstanding staff that loves working with your children. We all need a little “pat on the back” from time to time. Coach's Update from Mrs. Horsford

Greetings Families,

Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11, to honor the women and men who have served in our country's military. Attached is a picture from our media center of a few books on Veterans Day and the United States military.

The following books are in the picture from our media center:

1. The U.S. Army by Matt Doeden

2. Veterans Day by Mari Schuh

3. Veterans Day by Mir Tamim

4. Air Force by Derek Zobel

If you are a veteran or have veterans in your family, share your family information with your child.

All the best,

Mrs. Horsford

Parent Tip of the Week from the Kid Whisperer

Your kids will become uncomfortable while learning to do new things. That is the very essence of learning and growing up. It requires having one foot in the known, and one foot in the unknown. Putting that foot in the unknown is inherently uncomfortable. The first time you do something, whether it’s taking a shower, eating a sandwich with crusts on it, or driving a car, there will be discomfort.

It IS your job to be an encouraging, empathetic supporter that requires your kids to do “life stuff” (showers, crust, driving). It IS NOT your job to make sure that your kid is always comfortable. Curating your kids’ lives so that they can avoid these things until they feel great about them tells your kids that you think crusts are too crusty for them, driving is too difficult for them, and that you think moving water is too scary for them. Empathetically requiring kids to be uncomfortable says to your kid, “I love you, you’re tough, and you can do this!”

Holiday Assistance

Pickerington Schools are once again teaming up with the Violet Township Fire Department to help provide some holiday assistance for families in need during this holiday season.

In need of assistance?

Request an online form for holiday assistance by contacting me at kendra_stewart@plsd.us or 614-548-1431. The request link will then be provided to you, only one per household please. This form is handled in a confidential manner with more details from your school counselor. Please remember that we will only be able to supplement your holiday. The online form must be completed by Friday, November 20th.

Wanting to donate?

There are several ways to donate this year:

  • The traditional big red boxes throughout the community and in the schools accepting donations of new toys/gifts.

  • Gift cards are also appreciated.

  • Cash donations through Paypal.

  • Another way of donating this year is through Amazon and Target. If you would prefer to donate in this way, click on the links below. Be sure to ship to Violet Township Fire Department Toy Drive (address will appear as an option).

H.O.P.E Food Bags

Violet Baptist Church offers a Weekend Food Program. This program was created to help those families in need of meals for their children over the weekend. This is offered to our students for FREE. Each student in the house is eligible. Students will take their bags home on either Monday or Thursday, depending on which hybrid day they are here. If your student is VLA and would like to participate, you will pick up the bag(s) from the school on Thursday or Friday. Please reach out to Kendra Stewart, School Counselor by phone at 614-548-1431 or email at kendra_stewart@plsd.us in order to sign up.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program

Pickerington Elementary would like to introduce Big Brothers Big Sisters and its school-based mentoring program. School-based mentoring assists youths in realizing their full potential academically. Bigs meet with Littles at school, whether it’s in the classroom or on the playground. Currently, meetings are happening virtually on the students' virtual learning days with their 'Big' as a BBBS staff member monitors the hangout. When we return to full-time in-person learning and once visitors are allowed to return to buildings, Bigs would come to our school to meet with the Little at a time that works best for the pair. These meetings are typically scheduled during lunch/recess depending on the availability of the Big. The meetings usually last about 40 to 45 minutes once per week throughout the school year.

If you think this would be a good fit for your child please contact Ms. Stewart or Ms. Smith (Intern) at (614) 548-1431 or by email at kendra_stewart@plsd.us / ashley_smith@plsd.us.

Early Dismissal Protocol

If you are planning an early dismissal, please send in a signed note OR call the school office to let us know before coming to pick up your child. This will ensure your child is ready to go at the requested time.

Also, If you need to sign your child in or out of school, please use the QR code located on the front doors. All parents are expected to walk their child to and from the main entrance when signing a child in or out of school. Unfortunately, we are unable to allow parents in the building due to COVID unless it is an emergency.

Come join us!

PLSD has multiple classified job openings, including duty aides, health care assistants, and two full-time custodian positions. We also need substitutes in all areas, but especially custodians. If you or someone you know is interested, you can go to the Human Resources page on the district website or contact Scott Philabaum at Scott_Philabaum@plsd.us.
