BLOCK D SEMINAR OPTIONS FOR 3RD QUARTER

Because a significant percentage of Compass Academy students have indicated an interest in taking more STEM courses, we are offering two additional seminars for credit during Block D (4:15-6:45 pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays) in the 3rd quarter. The seminars are:

  • 3D101: Learn how to use CAD software to design three-dimensional objects, then print them using 3D print technology, laser engraving, and wood carving machinery.
  • Text Adventure Programming: play interactive fiction computer games to learn how they work, and then use object-oriented computer software to program your own interactive fiction game for others to play.

You may register your student for one of these courses now by following this link.

LUNCH ORDERS- DUE EACH MORNING BY 9:45 AM

Students at Compass Academy are now able to order lunch until 9:45 a.m. each day on the day they wish to receive a school lunch. EVERY STUDENT WHO PLANS TO TAKE A LUNCH, INCLUDING THE VALUE MEAL WHICH IS FREE, NEEDS TO COMPLETE THIS SO WE HAVE AN ACCURATE COUNT OF MEALS NEEDED. After surveying students about ways to improve their lunch experience, we made this change, along with several others. We are continually working to provide the best possible experience for students at Compass, and lunch is a part of that. We appreciate the students who provided feedback to help inform these improvements and will continue to seek student input on this and other decisions that impact them.

PARENT SURVEY

As you may know, we survey students frequently to get their input regarding decisions we make that impact them. Their voice is critical in our continuous improvement cycle, but so is the voice of parents. If you haven't already completed this parent survey, please take some time to respond honestly to the included questions. I also welcome your calls or emails anytime. We approach our work at Compass Academy thoughtfully and intentionally, and we strive for improvement each quarter in meeting our students' needs, so we greatly appreciate the support of our Compass families in this regard.

SPEAKER SERIES

If your student is interested in entrepreneurship, manufacturing, or skateboarding, encourage them to sign up through their Work-Based Learning course for one of this week's sessions in our Speaker Series, offering Compass Academy students the opportunity to engage in conversations with people from a variety of careers.

Wednesday (12/8), 9:30-10:15 am:

Sapient Skateboards, William Stephan

Wednesday (12/8), 2:15-3:00 pm: TBD

We are always looking for careers to highlight, so if you or someone you know may be interested in participating in our Speaker Series, please contact Sharon Stanley (sharon.stanley@d303.org).

JOB SHADOWING FOR SECOND SEMESTER- REGISTER NOW!

The city of St. Charles is offering a job shadowing program that will provide opportunities for Compass Academy students on Wednesdays next semester! In the new career pathway job shadow program, which is open to St. Charles high school students interested in exploring a career in municipal government, students can shadow people in all many career fields, including engineering, communications, accounting, firefighting, law enforcement, construction, and vehicle maintenance.

Students may schedule up to three different job shadow experiences per school year, during which they can explore work sites, ask questions, see demonstrations, and learn about education and certifications. Students will be responsible for transportation to and from the City. The date, time, and length of the job shadow will be scheduled outside of school hours directly with the City’s job shadow program coordinator. Compass students should schedule their shadowing on Wednesdays whenever possible.

Interested students should complete the Registration Form and return it to Mrs. Stanley or Ms. Ohlson at Compass Academy.

DO YOU KNOW STUDENTS WHO MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COMPASS ACADEMY NEXT YEAR? INVITE THEM TO OUR OPEN HOUSE ON 12/7.

Big picture

COURSE REQUEST PROCESS FOR COMPASS ACADEMY, 2022-23

Many Compass students have asked about course requests and how they should approach this process for next school year. Students who are interested in taking elective courses at East or North High School should indicate that interest in HAC. Soon, there will be additional Compass Academy course options for students to request in HAC as well.

Students were surveyed recently about courses they would like us to add at Compass, so in keeping with our model- giving students voice and choice- we are working to develop related course proposals now in alignment with Illinois State Board of Education course codes and guidelines. Once all courses we will be offering next year are visible in HAC, students and parents will be informed.

Please understand that high school students' course selections are not finalized until they meet with their counselor in January after winter break. Schedules are built after that process is completed for all high school students. This means that all students who complete their course requests before meeting with their counselor in January will have the opportunity to be placed in their requested courses at East or North and Compass Academy.
