A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Students, Staff, and Families,
I've received many questions since last week's message. I'll address the most frequently asked of those questions below. Find the entire 2020-21 FAQ on our web site. Here's how to navigate to the FAQ page.
START ON THE HOME PAGE
HAS ANYTHING CHANGED SINCE LAST WEEK REGARDING THE START OF SCHOOL?
No. As planned, we will begin instruction on August 10, full-distance only. We cannot reopen our school sites for the physical return of students until Riverside County is off the "Watch List" for 14 consecutive days. When Riverside County is off the list, school districts will work closely with County health officials to determine when it's safe for the physical return of their students to campus, based on the local conditions in each community across Riverside County. On July 16, AUSD delayed the physical return of students until at least after Labor Day. We will reassess at that time, depending on our Watch List status.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT WHEN SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE OFF THE WATCH LIST AND ELIGIBLE TO REOPEN?
School districts will assess their local conditions, based on input from the Riverside County Public Health Officer. Assuming it is determined by health officials to be safe to return, the Board of Education will convene to discuss and develop a timeline for re-entry for students in the Hybrid model. Notification will be provided in a timely manner, all safety measures and protocols will be in place, and all expectations for on-campus behaviors will be clearly communicated.
WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING BETWEEN NOW AND AUGUST 10, WHEN SCHOOL STARTS?
Please confirm that all of your contact information is up to date in the AERIES Parent Portal.
- If you need assistance, please visit our web page for instructions about registration and data confirmation. Watch the "How-To" videos in English or Spanish.
- For more help visit our Helpful Tips page here.
- For live support call (951) 509-5197 or email our Student Information team.
HOW CAN I GET A LAPTOP AND INTERNET CONNECTIVITY AND TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT?
Submit the technology needs assessment survey sent to all families by principals on Monday, July 13. If you did not receive it please contact your principal immediately. For details on Technology Support, visit the FAQ and choose Just Technology, or call the Help Desk: (951) 509-5180 or email Chromebook Support.
WHEN WILL STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES KNOW THEIR TEACHER(S) AND CLASS SCHEDULE?
Families choosing Full-Distance, not hybrid, were asked to complete the program choice preference survey and submit it to their principal by July 20. Families that did not choose Full Distance (no in-person instruction), default into the Hybrid program. Over the course of the next two weeks, now that we know program choices, the process of scheduling students is underway. Principals will notify students and their families as soon as the process is complete.
CAN I STILL CHANGE MY PROGRAM CHOICE?
To ensure we are ready to begin instruction on August 10, we set July 20 for the deadline to choose either Full Distance, no in-person instruction, or Hybrid, a blend on in-person instruction and distance learning. However, if you are having second thoughts about your choice, please call your principal immediately to discuss your concerns. All students, regardless of program choice, will begin remotely while Riverside County remains on the State's Coronavirus Watch List. However, scheduling by program allows us to transition to the blended model when school buildings do reopen for the physical return of students who have chosen Hybrid.
HOW CAN I LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ELEMENTARY HYBRID AND FULL DISTANCE PROGRAM CHOICES AND WHAT I CAN EXPECT?

WILL MEALS BE PROVIDED FOR STUDENTS IN THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM AND STUDENTS ON PAID STATUS?
During the period of remote learning only (Starting August 10, until such time students are able to physically return to campus) school meals will be available to all students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals and students in a paid status.
HOW CAN I APPLY FOR THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM?
Apply for the National School Lunch Program here. Complete and submit the application. Watch the "How-To" videos on completing the applications in English or in Spanish.
HOW WILL BREAKFAST AND LUNCH WORK WHEN SCHOOL BEGINS REMOTELY ON AUGUST 10?
All school cafeterias will be open M-F for meal distribution in the cafeteria during the designated time period for lunch, approximately 12:00 - 12:45 at elementary schools, and 12:00 - 1:00 at middle and high schools. Times may vary slightly by school. See your school's specific daily schedule.
DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BE PRESENT TO PICK UP MEALS?
No. But the meal pick-up person must have the student(s) School ID card to scan to receive meals.
WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL TO PICK UP MEALS?
- The meal pick-up person must wear face covering.
- The person will arrive during the school's designated meal time (see above).
- Upon entry, while social distancing, the meal pick-up person will have a temperature check to ensure a temperature below 100.4 degrees and that there are no observable COVID-19 symptoms as outlined by public health officials.
Persons who do not have face covering, or those with temperatures above 100.4 or exhibiting symptoms will not be permitted to enter.
WHAT IF I HAVE CHILDREN ATTENDING MULTIPLE SCHOOLS?
Parents can pick up meals for all their children from any one of the schools their children attend. But the person must have each child's separate Student ID card.
WHAT SCHOOL DO I PICK UP MY MEALS FROM IF I'VE CHOSEN THE VIRTUAL, NO IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION MODEL?
Students remain connected to their home school. Five days of meals will be provided for those in the free and reduced price meals program and the paid status program, every Friday (when no students are present on campus) at their home school or the school nearest to their home. Child Nutrition Services will contact families with details before August 10.
For additional details on the meal program and for updates, please visit the FAQ and choose
Just the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).
Please remember that although principals and essential workforce staff will be present on school campuses, schools will remain closed to the public, except by appointment. The District office protocol is the same: by appointment only. Please call or e-mail your school site or District staff with any questions. If an on-site visit is required, it will be scheduled as an appointment to ensure safe social distancing. Face covering is required. Temperatures will be taken. Persons with a temperature above 100.4 will be asked to reschedule their appointment.
Speaking on behalf of the Board of Education and our entire team of educators and support staff, please know that we are doing everything in our power to create a positive educational experience for our students and our entire school community during this unprecedented and difficult time. I recognize that the uncertainty revolving around returning students to school campuses has many families and employees scrambling and struggling to make arrangements, not to mention navigating mostly remote learning environments and communication systems. The challenges that lie ahead this school year add more stress to an already stressful situation. As I noted in last week's message, we have increased our capacity to help students and their families in a variety of ways, including bolstering both our Family Engagement Office and Student Services departments. Please keep the lines of communications wide open by staying in constant contact with your school and our district. Read my weekly message and visit the our web site frequently.
Please reach out to us. We are here to help.
