The mission of the Westside Community School District, as an innovative educational system, is to ensure academic excellence and to serve the unique needs of all of our learners.
Oakdale Elementary’s mission is to ensure academic excellence and to serve the unique needs of all learners.
Welcome to the month of October and our monthly newsletter!
As you can tell, we are trying out a new newsletter format for our Oakdale Tiger Tracks. One of the biggest complaints from parents about the newsletter was that you had to click to download an attachment and that made it cumbersome. With this new format, we hope you will be able to directly click on an attachment and view it immediately. As always, please send me your feedback and let me know your thoughts. Enjoy the new Tiger Tracks and the cooler weather this month holds.
~ Mr. Jagels

Halloween Parade and Parties
On Friday, October 26th, Oakdale will be celebrating Halloween. If your child needs assistance with their costume, parents are welcome to come help starting at 2:35 p.m. At 2:45 p.m., we will hold a parade outside behind the building. We will walk on the loop sidewalk from the cafeteria doors to the early childhood entrance. Inside the playground area, soccer field, or on the blacktop will be great locations for parents to view all the costumes. After the parade, classroom parties will begin and last until about 3:20 p.m. when teachers will get their students ready to depart for the day.
Please remember that costumes need to be "family friendly" as the preschool students will also be able to view the parade. If a costume includes weapons, or blood or gore, we ask that those accessories be left at home. If a student comes with weapons or blood and gore costumes, we will ask that they not change into them. Please help us have a safe and friendly party by discussing this with your child before the party. We appreciate your understanding in this matter.
With the district’s safer and healthier foods policy this year, room parents will again not be providing snacks for the party. Instead, our district nutrition services department will be providing a cookie and juice for all students. This will allow parents to focus their time and resources on the games and activities for the party.
Parking at Oakdale is limited for large events like this during the school day. We will open the blacktop for additional parking and the church has agreed to allow parking for this event in their lot as well. Parking is also allowed against the curb closest to the school, however, all cars would need to vacate this area by 3:30 p.m. for regular pick-up. Please consider walking or carpooling, and only park in designated parking stalls as we have several buses that arrive at the end of the day and they cannot make it through the parking lot if cars are not properly parked.
STEAM Night
Don’t forget that our first STEAM Night will be next Thursday, October 11th, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. here in the Oakdale cafeteria and gym. Stop by for a fun-filled hour of science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities for the whole family! We hope to see you there!
TeamMates Program
If you have 30 minutes each school week to give to a child, consider being a TeamMates mentor. TeamMates provides support and encouragement to students through one-to-one, school-based mentoring. The impact of a TeamMates mentor in the life of a young person is remarkable, with mentees being more hopeful and engaged and seeing improvements in their attendance, behavior, and course performance. Our Oakdale mentors have raved about how the program has given THEM so much in return. If you are
interested, contact Mrs. McPadden 402-408-8880.
We are proud of our learners!
September's High Five Drawing Winners

Red Ribbon Week
During Red Ribbon activities, Oakdale is taking time to educate our students about healthy choices. The Oakdale Student Council created video examples to show a variety of ways students could refuse any offers of drugs. Our fifth and sixth grades will have 2 lessons this month on e-cigarettes and making healthy (natural high) choices. Our staff is being provided with additional education, and we wanted to also provide talking points for parents regarding e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. A paper copy of the Parent Tip Sheet below is being provided to all fifth and sixth graders. Other parents are invited to learn more by checking out this link:
