Every Student, Every Day, Deserves to Learn, Lead, & Excel!
A Message from Ms. Perkins:
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first All Pro Dads Breakfast. It was standing room only. Our students and families were very excited and enjoyed a great morning of breakfast together. A special thank you to Mr. Reggie Williams for facilitating the event.
On Thursday we had lots of excitement with our Day of Awesomeness celebration. We appreciate all of the families and neighbors who supported our students and school in the PTA's fundraising effort.
Next Thursday, November 7, 2019 we will hold the Simonton ES Literacy Night. Bring the whole family out for an awesome night celebrating literacy. The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open that evening.
I want to give a high five to our students and staff for doing a wonderful job during our first lock down drill for the school year. They did an awesome job following directions and finding their safe space during the drill.
Have a wonderful weekend and stay warm.

STEM Fair for 4th & 5th Graders:
STEM Projects differ from most traditional research projects. In a STEM project, students will design a new solution to a problem, build it, and test the outcomes.
For the 2019-20 Gwinnett Science, Engineering and Innovation Fair, our elementary students will have the opportunity to design solutions to real problems that we face in Gwinnett County and in Georgia. Students will select a problem that they have an interest in and then work within the engineering design process to create their solution.
All students completing a STEM project will need to have a STEM project log and follow a common set of steps.
The steps in the project will be as follows:
1. Decide on the problem/question that interests you from the GCPS sponsored problems provided.
2. Identify constraints.
3. Gather information about the problem and start to brainstorm ideas.
4. Design a solution to test.
5. Test (3 trial minimum) and evaluate the solution.
6. Reflect on results and redesign, as necessary.
Safety Note: Students are not allowed to work with the following: Human subjects, NonHuman Vertebrates, Pathogenic (Biological) Agents, Microorganisms, Recombinant DNA, Human or Animal Tissue
Please go to Mrs. Asletine's eClass page for more details.
Weekly Family Engagement Tips:
1. Good Manners are Important at Home and School When a child misbehaves in school, everybody loses. Classroom time must be spent on discipline instead of learning. The manners children use at home are the ones they take to school. Expect your child to be considerate, and to express disagreement politely. Teach her to pay attention to the teacher and raise her hand. Respect for others is a critical factor in making the school a peaceful, productive place to learn. 2. Add Acts of Kindness to Your Child's To-Do List We all want our children to grow up to be kind and caring people. Here's a simple way you can help: With your child, make a list of all the children in his class. Then each morning, ask your child to choose a different name from the list. Talk about a specific way he could show kindness to that student. To remind him, you might put a note in his lunch bag. After school, talk about what your child did. 3. Make Concentrating on Homework Easier for Your Child To get the most out of homework, children must be able to focus on it. Doing homework at the same time every day helps your child turn her attention to it more easily. Nearby TVs and devices should be off. If your child has trouble concentrating, set a timer for five minutes and have her work until it rings. Let her take a one-minute break, and reset the timer. Gradually increase the time you set. 4. Ask the Questions that Get Kids Talking about School Sometimes, having a conversation with a child is like playing a game of 20 Questions. To encourage him to tell you more, make sure your questions can't be answered with a simple yes or no. Instead, start with words like "what " or "how" or "tell me." For example: "What did you do in science today?" "How would you go about solving the problems in your math homework?" "Tell me what you're doing on your social studies project." 5. Help Your Child Map the World on a Pumpkin Globe To teach your child about world geography, give her a round pumpkin. Pretend that the stem end is the North Pole, and the blossom end on the bottom is the South Pole. The pumpkin's grooves are like lines of longitude. Have your child measure halfway between the poles and draw the equator around the pumpkin. Then, help her refer to maps or a globe to draw the continents in the correct hemispheres. 6. Try Giving Spelling a High-Tech Twist Kids love technology, and it can make studying spelling words more fun. Encourage your child to type his word list into a word-processing program. Let him play with fonts, colors and designs as he retypes each word several times. He can add clip art (free illustrations available online) and print out his work for a memorable study guide. 7. How to Find Books that will Turn Your Child on to Reading The "right" books for your child aren't necessarily expensive. What matters is that they appeal to her. Look for books that match your child's current interests. Choose books that are well-written, with strong plots and well-developed characters. Most of the words should be familiar to your child, but it's OK if a book is a little above her reading level. You can read it to her now, and she can read it herself later on.
