General Management

Becoming Successful.

Growing up and staying in hotels that my dad managed was always exciting. Being able to watch what he did, how he was able to handle things that were problematic, and how he was able to make such big decisions that can have a big effect in the hotel always caught my attention. Now that I am older, and I am able to understand more of the things that he does, the general management field interests me even more. It may be a difficult job, but I know that in the end it all will pay off being a manager of a successful business.

Working Activities

  • Getting Information.
Observing, Receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.

  • Making Decisions.
Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Coordinating the Work and Activities of Others.
Getting the members of a group to work together to accomplish tasks.

  • Communicating with Persons Outside the Organization.
Representing the organization to customers, the public, etc.

Work Environment.

General managers are among the top executives of a company, and they perform a wide variety of duties to ensure their business runs smoothly and efficiently. They manage the day to day operations of the company, establish policies and procedures, and plan for the possession of assignments. They supervise activities related to providing services or to marketing products, and coordinate departments that deal with the pricing, production, distribution and sales.

Education and Training.

Education that can help you understand general management, or at least the business field is entrepreneurship. Other courses that can be effective are Managerial Accounting, Principles of Management,

Preferred Job Skills.

  • Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Monitoring - monitoring/assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organization to make improvement or take corrective action.

Job Outlook

Wage and salary jobs in business and management and administrative services are expected to grow as fast as average.


The national average wage is $113,100.


There aren't any classes in my high school that help me with business management, but there are classes that will help me understand the business work area.

To Sum it All Up

In doing this career project I learned that being able to get help and to gain experience in this field is the best way to go. Being able to understand everything that can help you in becoming successful in this certain work field, is being able to work with others, being able to make sure that everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing, and to be able to communicate with customers is also key.
