Memorial Plaque Dedication

On Thursday afternoon, students, teachers, and guests gathered in a ceremony to unveil a new plaque dedicated to former student, Robin Samsoe. Robin was a 6th grade Jr. Oiler who was abducted and later found dead in 1979. Students in Mrs. Rasmussen's classes heard about her story through a visit from local historian, Chris Epting. They learned that Robin's class planted the tree on campus at the corner of Palm and 14th. There used to be a plaque in her memory that went missing sometime in the last 20 years.

Students wrote letters, started a donation fund, involved local businesses, wrote the inscription, and had the plaque installed. During the ceremony, students read speeches about what this whole process has meant to them and how Robin touched their lives. Thank you to Mrs. Rasmussen, Mr. Epting, and to the students who spoke - Brandon Gorman, Kristen Gomes, Niko Lopez, Mariana Vaswani, Pedro Polvo, Jack Bosson, Sam Sobel, Jonathan Wong, and Cole Calleja.

This is such a great example of taking passion and concern, getting involved in your community, and making a difference. We are so proud of the great citizens that are Jr. Oilers!
