Good Morning Memorial Families,
Well, we received our first real snowstorm of the season yesterday and it reminded me that I am not sure if I reviewed our winter recess procedures with families. As long as the feels like temperature outside is not below 20 degrees, your children will be outside for recess. When there is snow on the field, we do allow for students to play in the snow if they would like to. Otherwise, they remain on the courts for the recess period. To play in the snow, please send your child into school with the following:
1. A warm winter coat
2. Snowpants
3. Boots
4. A hat (a hood on the coat works as well)
5. Gloves or mittens
We appreciate all students coming to school with the appropriate outerwear this time of year. A coat is essential, so if your family is in financial need, please reach out so that we can work to secure a coat for your child. We also tend to have a growing lost and found throughout the winter months. Please label all of your child's clothing that they might remove (outdoorwear, sweatshirts, baseball hats, water bottles) so that we can promptly return it when it is left on the playground, in the field, or in the cafeteria.
It is hard to believe that we are already beginning to think about the 2024-2025 school year, but we are! If you have a child turning five on or before August 31st, they are eligible to begin kindergarten. We will be holding a kindergarten information night on January 24th at 6:00pm in the cafeteria at Memorial. We will cover kindergarten readiness, a general overview of a day in the life of a kindergartener, and what you can expect in the first few months of school. We will also provide you with some tips and ideas for how to help you with the transition into a full day of school. If you know someone with a child entering kindergarten next year who does not receive this newsletter, feel free to direct them to our school website to get more information. We will also be holding a separate virtual information night in early February for families interested in learning more about our Spanish Immersion program here in MURSD. We will share that date as soon as it is confirmed.
As a reminder, this coming Friday, January 12th, is a scheduled early release day for students to allow for teacher professional development. We will begin dismissal for students at approximately 12:10pm. Next Monday, January 16th we do not have school due to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
Have a wonderful week!
Warmly,
Wendy and Lauren
Photo Form for Student Use
There was information in an earlier newsletter that introduced how students at Memorial are developing effective communication skills. One of the ways that we are looking to make this more of an inclusive practice is thinking about all of the different ways our students communicate. There are students at Memorial that use an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to communicate their wants and needs including social interactions with peers and family members. We would like to be able to place photos of these students' classmates on the individual AAC devices to help with this communication both at home and with their families at home. We are asking all families to complete this form indicating whether or not you give permission for your child's photo to be used. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to the Memorial School office.

Our school hours are 8:45am-3:15pm. Drop off begins at 8:45 and students who arrive after 9:00am are considered tardy. We will begin dismissal right around 3:15pm.
