What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body

What may cause a Concussion?

A blow to the head, a fall, or a shake that jars the brain inside the skull.

Signs and Symptoms

~Brief loss of Consciousness

~Memory problems

~Confusion

~Drowsiness or feeling sluggish

~Dizziness

~Blurred Vision

Field Treatment

~Remove athlete from game/practice

~Notify parents

~Allow athletic trainer to assess

Hospital Treatment

~Physician Evaluation

~Must be cleared by physician to return to play.

How do you prevent concussions?

~Proper head protection
~Mouthpieces
~Exercise to increase neck strength.

Statistics

~Football accounts for 47% of concussions reported.

~33% of concussions happen at practice.
