Slackwood Rocks the Board of Education

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the Board of Education of Lawrence Township met to hold their monthly get-together. Lucky for us, Slackwood School was on the agenda. Mrs. Kapp and Mrs. Wallauer presented to the Board and all of the audience about our Literacy programs at Slackwood. It was an awesome show where they disclosed the data related to our summer reading program. As most everyone knows, students from Slackwood received 12 books last summer of their own selection. Research shows that students who have self-selected reading material that is readily available will have less of a chance of having the "summer slide". The "Summer Slide" is where students lose some of their reading skills during the summer because they are not practicing those skills daily.

Our data shows that 89% of the students who were given books came back to school at or above the reading level they were at when school ended in June. 43% showed an increase in reading level. 89% is a large number and it is due to the diligence of our students and their families. Students did not have to take the typical 6 weeks to get back up to speed.

After the Literacy Presentation, Miss Cook and her students had the opportunity to show their creativity and presented their Cardboard Challenge. They brought their cardboard arcade to the high school and board members and community members had the opportunity to see the genius of our children.

Strategic Planning For The District

It's that time again when the school district begins to plan for the next five years. It is an important process that occurs in order to make sure that we are on the right track. The community (YOU!) can be involved in the process. First, if you haven't done so, take the community survey that is below on this newsletter. Second, come to the Community Conversation which will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014. The event will be held in the Lawrence HS Commons. Doors open at 6:30 with light refreshments and the event begins at 7 PM. Register here to attend the conversation.
