North Devon RE hub
We met on 30th June, at St Margaret's School, in Northam, Bideford.
We were joined by Linda Ford-Horne who talked about aspects of Judaism, in particular Shabbat and the lesser known end-of-Shabbat celebration, Havdalah.
She brought to life the rich cultural heritage within the Jewish faith , and its impact on life and practice. She pointed out how to spot Kosher food in the supermarket (look for a small k!) and what constitutes work on a sabbath! She taught us about the importance of the mezuza on every door frame of the house and touched on the difficult times that Jews have faced in history.
She spent the day leading up to this meeting with two local schools, giving children the chance to explore Judaism in a fun, interactive way.
She also gave us some advice about what items we should have in a Jewish artefact box.
She passed on lots of useful resources, such as a song for Shabbat and the recipe for Challah bread which you will be able to access via the LTLRE website (link below).
Havdalah (Hebrew: הַבְדָּלָה, meaning 'separation') is a Jewish religious ceremony that marks the symbolic end of Shabbat and Jewish holidays, and ushers in the new week. The ritual involves lighting a special havdalah candle with several wicks, blessing a cup of wine and smelling sweet spices.Shabbat ends on Saturday night after the appearance of three stars in the sky. Some communities delay the Havdalah in order to prolong Shabbat. (source: Wikipedia)
Lynda got 65 children to participate in a Jewish wedding dance!

Children had the chance to handle artefacts, ask questions and delve into aspects of Jewish tradition.
