German Americans


Some of the reasons the Germans came to America was because Germans were getting tired of their rulers men were being forced to join the army and become soldiers. Also it was hard to get food back in Germany. But they also came for a better life.

Sour Cream Apple Crumb Kuchen

2/3 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup chilled butter,cubed

For Apples

1 1/2 pound apples

1 splash of lemon juice

1/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 cup(1 stick) butter,room temperature

1/2 cup sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

8 ounce sour cream(regular or light)

1/2 cup(1 stick) butter

1/2 cup light brown sugar

2 tablespoon half ans half

1/4 teaspoon fleur de sel or coarse salt


Preheat oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and lightly dust a 9" x 13" cake pan with flour,taping of any excess. Set aside.In a small bowl combine flour,brown sugar and butter and mix together with a pastry blender or fork until butter is the size of peas. set aside. In a small bowl combine apple slices with a splash of lemon juice. Toss with sugar and cinnamon and set aside.In a medium bowl stir together flour,baking powder and baking soda. In a large bowl with a electric mixer cream butter and sugar on low speed. Stir on eggs at a time. Add in vanilla. Gradually add in flour mixture, alternating with some of the sour cream until all blended.Pour into prepared pan. Stick apples lightly into top of dough. Sprinkle with crumb topping. Bake in preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes until it pulls from the side of the pan. Cool on rack. In a saucepan combine butter,brown sugar and half and half.Stir Occasionally over medium heat until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Bring to a boil and stir frequently for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in salt.
