Loyola Innovates
Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship- October 2019
Leading With Entrepreneurship by Founding Director, Wendy Bolger
Happy Fall, Innovators!
I’m writing from Sweden, where the Stockholm School of Entrepreneurship is hosting the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Conference (GCEC), an annual gathering of university leaders committed to advancing innovation and entrepreneurship. This year I served as a judge for the annual awards and will be a speaker at a luncheon roundtable. Most importantly, this year, I am on a mission to identify conference best practices and get to know the participants and their needs. What is the membership looking for in their conference experience?
Why am I on a mission this year? While what’s happening in Stockholm this week may seem a world away, in two short years, the GCEC will be right here on our Evergreen campus, when the conference comes to Baltimore! In partnership with our colleagues at the University of Baltimore, Loyola is the co-host of the 2021 GCEC Conference, “Leading with Entrepreneurship: Succeeding in Revitalization.” We are thrilled to showcase the positive impact the entrepreneurial ecosystem is having in Baltimore.
Did you know Baltimore is #5 in “Top Cities for Minority Entrepreneurs” and #2 in “Best Cities for Women in Tech”? We are the 5th city listed in Forbes’ list of Top 10 rising cities for startups! For students, this data adds up, making Baltimore one of “Three Best U.S. Cities for Recent College Grads.”
At the CI&E, we have a few years to develop and execute our plan for the GCEC Conference. So, what about you? Where do you plan to be in 2 years? What problem are you going to solve by fall 2021? By fall 2021, we expect Baltimore’s innovators and entrepreneurs will have come a long way (aiming for #1 rankings!). We hope you will be a part of that journey of developing your innovation skills too, by getting involved with Loyola’s Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship!
A Review of Innovation Bootcamp by Christopher Carangelo '20
The Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CI&E) Innovation Bootcamp that I attended at the beginning of the semester was most likely one of the most unique and transformative experiences I’ve had while at Loyola. This brand-new three-day program led by Founding Director Wendy Bolger and Entrepreneur in Residence William Romani delves into the process of design thinking and the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. Our group was small, but incredibly diverse -- no two majors the same. We all had different career goals, and yet we all were able to benefit from this program. Aside from the informative lectures and activities we took part in, we also had the opportunity to travel throughout Baltimore and visit innovative businesses such as Seawall, AARP Foundation, T-Rowe Price Innovation Center, and Open Works. The most amazing portions of these trips were when we had a chance to speak to the CEOs and other employees about their work and how they built their businesses. The stories they told were enlightening, and the advice they gave was priceless. I walked away from this program with a reignited passion for innovation and entrepreneurship.
