Counselors' Corner
January 2021
Welcome to Spring Semester!!
Goal Setting in the New Year
S - Specific
- Be specific about what you want to accomplish. This is the "who, what, when, where, which and why" of your goal.
M - Measurable
- How will you determine when you have reached your goal? Instead of making a goal to run faster, your goal might be to run an 8-minute mile.
A - Attainable
- Making sure your goal is realistic will actually help you be more motivated to accomplish it.
R - Relevant
- Focus on something that truly matters to you.
T - Time-Bound
- Giving yourself a deadline or milestone dates will help you stay focused. Is your goal for the long- or short-term? Long-term goals can be broken up into smaller deadlines to help you stay on track!
Important Updates
Introducing C.A.R.E. Squad (Student Connections Group)
Conversations Acceptance Respect Empathy
Connecting with one another is something we need all the time. With everything going on in our world and our school community, connection with others is even more important. Every Thursday at 11 am, your counselors would like to invite you to join us for conversation, games, and time to just hang out with one another. If you are interested in joining us or would like to hear more, contact your counselor!
Registration for Classes for Next Year
Believe it or not, it is that time of year again! The Counseling Department will begin Course Registration starting on February 2nd for 11th grade students. This year, with distance learning, we will be meeting with our students virtually for Registration. The students will be invited to a “presentation” via Zoom and given their Registration Form through a Counseling Google Classroom (it will be an assignment). One week after their grade level presentation, each student will be given an individual appointment time to meet with their counselor via Zoom (not during their Cohort time). All students will receive an email the day after the presentation with their appointment time. The grade level presentation dates are as follows during scheduled Office Hours:
- February 2nd @ 11:00 am: Current 11th Grade Student Presentation
- February 16th @ 11:00 am: Current 10th Grade Student Presentation
- March 2nd @ 11:00am: Current 9th Grade Student Presentation
The students will receive an email with the Zoom information for these grade level presentations the week before the presentation. We understand that during this time there are many questions and potential issues with technology and we are happy to work with you. Please reach out to us if you have any concerns.

From the CCC
Moorpark College
Students, if you will be attending Moorpark College, please fill out the attached googleform, indicating any and all events you'd like to attend to help you with the application and registration process. There are also events that will help you gain a better understanding of MPCC, programs and services they offer, and other pertinent information. Additionally, sessions are available that will help you understand general education courses, class selection for your major, and preparing to transfer from a community college to a four-year university. Starting community college with a plan is imperative, especially if you are intent on transferring within two years.
Scholarships
- Ventura County Community Foundation scholarships (over 80 different opportunities) - Due 1/29/2021
- Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Scholars Program Due 1/31/20201
- Universal Scholarship Application, Simi Valley Unified School District Seniors only, available 2/15/2021 in Naviance and the 2021 College/Career Center Google Classroom. Due 4/20/2021
Financial Aid
- FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) deadline is March 2nd-file asap; over $100 Million is left unused simply because students do not apply
- It is a free application
- Skipping it does a major disservice to your potential financial aid opportunities (You may not qualify for need-based aid, but most colleges need the FAFSA to be completed in order to consider the student for any merit aid, scholarships, and loans)
- If you need assistance, all students (university, community college, or vocational school bound students) are welcome to attend a free workshop that will help you fill out the FAFSA, line-by-line (hosted by Ventura County Community College District)
- California Promise Grant for eligible community college students--must file the FAFSA
