'Safe Routes to School' Parent Survey
Students in grades 4-8 will be bringing home a survey for their parent or guardian to complete and send back to school. This survey will help the North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission look at and assess the level of safety our students have when coming to or leaving school.
Please fill out the survey your student brings home, or print one here. We appreciate your time and cooperation!
Notes from the Nurse
IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES:
Students in grades 1st through 5th also have the opportunity to participate in a NO COST Fluoride Rinse Program. Students will “Swish and Spit” for 1 minute each Friday in their classrooms. Fluoride rinse is safe and effective for reducing tooth decay. Some communities in our area have fluorinated water, but those with well-water systems generally do not contain or contain less than the recommended fluoride to help prevent tooth decay. If you wish to participate, please fill out the form and return it to school or nurse’s office.
The Oneida County Health Department will be at MJ1 Schools on October 23 for a Flu Clinic from 3:30pm-5:30pm. Oneida County bills Security Health Plan, UMR, United Healthcare, Medicare/Medicare Advantage plans, and Medicaid/BadgerCare. Card must be present at time of service. Cash or checks are also accepted. Children 18 and under are FREE and must have a guardian present. For more information, please call (715) 369-6111.
QUAD $40
High Dose $73.00
Northwoods Dental Project will be at MJ1 on November 14-15 to provide free oral health exams, fluoride varnish and dental sealants at no cost to all 2nd and 6th graders. This is a free preventative dental sealant program which is funded by the Wisconsin Seal-A-Smile, a collaborative program of Children’s Health Alliance of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Department of Health services. The program includes: assessment to determine if sealants can be done, sealants if appropriate, fluoride treatments and tooth brushing instructions. Even if you have a dental provider, the cost of dental sealants and fluoride varnish can add up. If you would like your student to participate, please fill out the form (click here) and return it to the school or nurse’s office by November 11.
Any questions please contact Pam Holtz, (715) 356-5206 x2204, or pholtz@mhlt.org.

WANTED: Fall Athletic Photos!
Calling all parents of fall athletes! Would you be willing to contribute pictures to our 2018-2019 yearbook? We'd love to have them! These should be pictures they are willing to have published for others to see of students participating in football, volleyball, and cross country. We would LOVE to have a variety of pictures for the yearbook, and parents often get the best pictures!
Pictures can be sent to bjohnson@mhlt.org, or you can upload them to our Parent Sports Pictures Google folder. Thank you!
Counseling Corner
During the month of October, your child will be learning skills for bullying prevention. MJ1 uses the bully prevention units from the Second Step curriculum to help students understand the "Recognize, Report, and Refuse" steps, as well as the responsibility of bystanders. Bullying is intentional, repetitive mean or aggressive behavior towards someone else. In a bullying situation, the victim can't make the aggressor stop. Bullying is unfair and one-sided.
Character Counts at Minocqua J1
The character trait for the month of October is EMPATHY. Empathy means you can feel or understand what someone else is feeling. The next time you sit down to dinner together, try discussing what it feels like to have a bad day and what you can do when you recognize someone else is having a bad day.
