Hawthorne School News 5/10/19

A newsletter from Hawthorne School and the PTA

THANK YOU

Thank you to all the parents and our PTA who made Staff Appreciation Week extra special for our Hawthorne faculty! It was a wonderful week of special notes, gifts, treats and surprises, and our staff is very grateful. Thank you for making us feel appreciated and loved! It is a joy working with our students and parents each day!

Cook's Night Off, When You Want It!

Hawthorne is having a Cook's Night Off, when you want it! To support our Blessings in a Backpack program, we are selling Barone's Pizza certificates. Flyers will be sent home in backpacks, and were also attached to Mrs. Moran's email blast as well. Certificates can be redeemed for frozen pizzas at Barone's, located in Glen Ellyn; just bring your certificate anytime to Barone's and go home with your take-n-bake cheese pizza.

You can also make a donation directly to our Blessings in a Backpack program here, be sure to type in "Hawthorne School" in the Designation Box. This program provides food on weekends for our Hawthorne students in need during the school year! Whether you donate or purchase a pizza, you will be supporting our Hawthorne families directly!

Summer Reading Book Club

Who's ready for summer?!?! Summer is a time to relax, have fun, and rejuvenate, and it's also a great time to enjoy a good book! Which is why this year, we are approaching summer reading in a new way!

Hawthorne students entering grades 1-5 will receive a book to read this summer, and have the opportunity to participate in a virtual summer book club. Students will be previewing a choice of books this week in the LLC (see choices below), and students will pick the book they want to read this summer! Our school will provide a copy of the book for each student to read over the summer, as well as fun and interactive things to do and think about related to the book. (Our students entering Kindergarten have already received a new book, called The Night Before Kindergarten.) We have made recommendations for which title would be most appropriate for which grade, however, students are welcomed to pick from any of the titles based on their reading level and interest!

When students return in August, we will have book club celebrations planned based on the book each student read this summer! We hope this will encourage ALL of our students to read this summer, have fun, and interact with books and our staff through reading. More details to come soon on the reading activities we have planned!

Parents, we encourage you to preview the book selections! Please click on the link below to see the choices, and there are photos below of each book choice as well! Parents are welcome to come into the LLC to see the book choices.

5th Grade Parent Night

Wednesday, May 15th, 7pm

Franklin Middle School Auditorium; 211 E. Franklin St. in Wheaton

All parents who have a 5th grader attending Franklin Middle School next year are welcomed to attend!

There will be a presentation from the 6th grade counselor, Mr. Erik Jensen, as well introductions with the PTA president, Mrs. Kerry Mansour, and school administrators Mr. Dave Bendis and Mr. Joe Kish. There will be time for parents to ask questions. This is a parent-only event, and students do not attend.

Gently Used Book Donations Needed

Mrs. Moran, Principal, will once again be collecting gently used or new book donations to give to low income families for summer reading. Books for ages 6-10 are greatly appreciated, including picture books and chapter books. Please bring your donations to the front office. Thank you!

PTA Receipts Needed

PTA committee chairs and anyone else who has paid out of pocket for PTA events, please turn in your receipts as soon as possible. A pdf of the receipt can be emailed to Christy Whittington with a note about what the funds were used for at christywhittington01@gmail.com. We need to wrap up all expenses for this year before the end of June. Thank you!

Thank You for staff experience donations

Big thank you to our generous staff who donated teacher experiences for the PTA’s silent auction. Sign up was available at Fun Fair and raised $600! These funds will help pay for PTA sponsored events such as class field trips, cultural arts assemblies, Mr. Lee science days, Battle of the Books, classroom parties, staff grants, and more.

School Supplies Made Easy!

It's time to start thinking about next year's Back to School Shopping! Look for order forms for the 2019-2020 School Supply Kits that came home in your child's backpack. Make it easy on yourself while supporting Hawthorne's PTA by letting us do the work for you! Carlson's (only the framing and art supply portion of their business is closing so they can expand their school supply area) will assemble the kits, deliver them to the PTA, and they'll be ready at your child's classroom when school starts in August. For a hassle-free first day of school next August, return payment and the completed form with your child's information for the upcoming school year to the office in an envelope marked School Supply Kits. Orders and payment must be received by (next week) Friday, May 10th. Feel free to email Melissa Johnson at melissa123j@yahoo.com with questions. If you decide to purchase school supplies on your own, please have your child bring the supplies on the first day of school next August.

Rent the Hawthorne Sign - Your Kids Will Love It!

Celebrate your child’s birthday in a big way! Wish him/her a Happy Birthday on the Hawthorne School sign. Rent it for their big day and let them see their name in big letters and lights! Cost is $20 for your first child and $10 for subsequent children. Another great way to support the PTA! You can find the form on the PTA website, in the main office or by clicking here.

The Last Day of School will be June 11th

The last student attendance day for the 2018-19 School Year is Tuesday, June 11, 2019. Due to this year’s four weather-related school closures, the Board of Education had to extend the school year. Board approved calendars contain five emergency days at the end of the school year in the event of school closure. Per the Illinois School Code, Districts are required to make-up up to five school closure days and therefore all four closure days will be made up.
