Chesapeake Bay

In what is now Maryland, the Chesapeake Bay is home to a rich amount of history. At first it was meant as a safe place for Roman Catholics but it soon turned into a town where the people were granted religious freedom. Although religious freedom was granted, a majority of the population was indentured servants. Gradually they would get their freedom but would not get much money from their crops which lead to an uproar known as the Bacon Rebellion. This rebellion lead to a rise in slave labor and slave trade which took centuries to come to an end.
1. They established the Georgia colony to be used both as a social experiment and as a buffer between them and the Spanish and the French. They brought in the poor and some indentured servants and had them establish family farms in hope that they would be hard workers. Pennsylvania was established as a religious experiment. The people of Pennsylvania all supported equality between their cultures and religions.

2. William Penn envisioned Pennsylvania to be a diverse settlement that revolves around religious tolerance and cooperation.

3. New York was known as the New Netherlands before english control. New Netherlands was primarily supposed to be inhabited by the dutch, but instead attracted many other cultures, which is why it was easier for them to give the control to the English because a majority of the population disliked the government already in place.

4. It was divided into New York and New Jersey. New York was kept by James, and New Jersey was given to James' two friends.

5. They focused mostly on North and South Carolina because they were given a charter for the area between Virginia and Florida. They also had easy access to the sea which made trade easier and so the people living in the North and South Carolina region thrived.
