Picture Day for Students in Grades 9, 10, & 11 -Friday September 15th

Picture forms can be picked up in the main office or on Friday before the pictures are taken.

Students in Physical Education

In Physical Education class this past week students participated in a team-building unit where they practiced aspects of communication, cooperation, trust and problem solving. We are off to a great start!

From the Science Department

The new "S" in STEAM class has been learning about the scientific method and the steps in the design method. Recently they have been tasked with making simple items from easily accessible household goods. As the class processes the tasks will become increasingly complex.

Here we see juniors Jordan Enright and Liam Drury making tops from paper plates, masking tape, pennies and a pencil. The challenge was to design and construct a top that spins for at least 30 seconds.

Acoustical Engineering

The Acoustical Engineering class has been discussing the basic physics of sound. They recently constructed a simple "harmonica", and I use that term loosely, out of rubber bands and popsicle sticks. Although fairly simple, the project was a very good way to illustrate how sound waves are generated. These short (you're welcome) videos show seniors Cassidie Ross and Stephen Durvin using there finished products.

Biomedical Innovations

As part of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) training for biomedical science, Mrs. Roberge built some DNA. Students will soon get a chance to use these new models to explore the structure of DNA.

Physics Class

Mr. Catucci's Honors Physical & Earth Science class started the year off with a Paperclip-Parachute Challenge.

The science and engineering goal for this challenge was to create a design that would take the longest time to fall to the ground with a paperclip attached to it.

Students could only use the following materials: 1 sheet of paper, 1 strip of tape 20.0 cm long and 1 paperclip meant to represent a person.

Students had fun creating and testing different designs and finding inspiration from nature, recreating things like feathers and leaves. At the same time they learned how to apply trial and error and work in groups to achieve a goal.

Social Studies

Mrs. Buonaccorsi's 2016-2017 Period 5 US I History class raised money last year so that they could hold an ice cream social for the senior citizens of Scituate. Unfortunately, the ice cream social was planned for the day Scituate had the lockdown at the end of the year. The ice cream social was cancelled and could not be rescheduled. Consequently, the students have decided to donate the money, $100, to hurricane relief. The following students participated in raising the money: Laura Allard, Preston Collazo, Liam Drury, Ceasar Fortin, Adrianna Fusaro, Emily Grande, Joe Kerkhoff, Alyssa Leonard, Emma Pierson, Mason Sheldon and Sean Ward.

Scituate Prevention Partnership

We have another full year of exciting prevention strategies in the making and need your valued input. I have attached a flyer for our High School open house event to take place on September 20th. You are all invited to attend and learn the hidden signs of potential teen drug use. I have also attached a design for our "Tip Line" ad campaign and I would like to hear your input before sending it for final State approval.

Our next day time meeting is September 21st from 1:00-2:00 in the High School library conference room. We will also be starting an additional evening meeting for those of you who can not make the 1:00 meeting. It is not necessary to attend both meetings. We are trying to create more community partners by holding evening meetings so please pass along the word to anyone you feel would be interested. The first evening meeting will be September 27th. The time and location is TBD in the near future.

Thank you for your continued support.

Spartan Football Opens Season with a WIN

The Spartan Football Team won their first game of the season against Ponaganset Saturday 20-14! Scoring for Scituate were Fox Fay on a five yard run, Steve Santanelli on a 15 yard run, and Zack Simonelli on a 25 yard run. Preston Collazo caught a two point conversion pass from Fox Fay. But the defense was the difference maker with key stops and a pivotal fumble recovery late in the game to seal the victory. Come support the team next Saturday when they take on EWG!
