Formative Assessment Techniques

At our GLC meeting this week we discussed possible professional development topics and instructional tips that would be helpful to provide to staff. Formative assessment techniques was an idea mentioned on the staff survey I sent out in July as a topic that staff is always interested in learning more about. I will plan to use this section of our weekly staff update to list 2-3 instructional strategies each week. I am sure that you are already familiar with some of these, but hopefully this can serve as refresher or a way to spark new ideas to use with our students. Please share any great tips you have so I can include them! Thanks!

Formative Assessment Strategies for:

Windshield Check: How many bugs to you have on your windshield? What is making it hard to see clearly?

Question Shells: General structures that can help frame questions in ways most likely to reveal students' thinking. For example: Why is___________ an example of ____________?

Original Question Reframed

Is a square a trapezoid? Why is a square a trapezoid?

Is carbon a metal? Why is carbon not a metal?

Is this a sentence or a clause? Why is this a sentence rather than a clause?

Is 23 prime? Why is 23 prime?

Questions Reframed in Terms of Contrasts: Present students with a contrast and then ask them to explain the contrast.

Original Question Reframed

What is a prime number? Why is 17 prime and 15 is not?

Is a bat a mammal? Why is a bat a mammal and a penguin is not?

* Kay & Paulus Orthodontics office will be here on Wednesday March 16 to present Dental Health to our 1st to 4th graders. I'm not ignoring our Kindergartners healthy teeth, they have their own presenter coming in:)

1:30pm- 2:00pm 1st grade

* Sumdog's next round of Lucas County contests will start Friday February 5, 2016 and will run until the following Thursday.

The contests are aimed at ages 5 - 14 but if a teacher feels a student is at an appropriate level for other students, they are also welcome to join in.

Students can play online either at school or at home using the website or the app!

"Staff Only" Areas

Please remember to be considerate of "Staff Only" areas in our school that students (and own children) need to stay out of. These areas include the staff lounge, staff work room (unless the child is participating in morning announcements), unsupervised children in classrooms/hallways outside of school day hours, and behind the office counter. We all greatly appreciate your help in maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of these spaces.

Winter RTI Benchmark Screening

The timeframe for our winter RTI benchmark screening is fast approaching! The window is Jan 19th- Feb 5th, and the schedule is as follows:

Grade K STAR Early Literacy is the week of Jan 19th-follow up with DIBELS for 25th percentile and below

Grade 1 STAR Early Literacy or STAR Reading is the week of Jan 19th-follow up with DIBELS for 25th percentile and below

Grade 2-4 STAR Reading is the week of Jan 19th-follow up with DIBELS for 25th percentile and below

Grade 1-4 STAR Math is the week of Jan 25th.

Grade K-4 Writing is the week of Jan 19th or Jan 25.

Make up screening is week of Feb 1st.

BGSU Student Teacher Matching

We have scheduled a BGSU matching evening on February 24th from 4:00pm-6:00pm for teachers interested in mentoring a methods/student teacher next school year. You will have the opportunity to interview teacher candidates and match with one. This event will be hosted at Waterville for all 3 primary buildings. Please let me know if you have any questions.

AIR Testing:

Below are three links related to testing. The first is simply the log in for AIR. You may want to bookmark that as we will be using that frequently in the months to come.

The second is a link to the PDF of the test administrator user guide.

The third is an actual test administrator certification course. It is pretty good. AIR works basically the same as it did last year with some minor modifications.
