Fall Coaching Challenge

Which School Will Win?

Are you up for a challenge?

Over the next few weeks, we'll be visiting each school for a special district-wide coaching challenge (see below for the date we'll be in your building). Prior to the event, you'll find a special ticket in your mailbox. On the ticket will be a picture of either turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, or pumpkin pie. Please keep your ticket -- you'll need it for the challenge!
Big picture

How does the challenge work?

On the date of the event, join us for as little or as long as you'd like to learn about a few high-impact discussion strategies. Just be sure to bring your ticket with you! We'll cut out the picture on your ticket and add it to one of our plates. A plate isn't considered full until all 4 food items (turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and pie) are on it.

Your challenge is to be the school that "fills up" the most Thanksgiving plates. Thus, working as a team is essential!

Note: Don't worry -- we will calculate a percentage (# of completed plates divided by the total # of possible completed plates) to make it fair since the buildings are different sizes.

What's in it for me?

1. You get to learn about tons of really great discussion strategies that can be immediately implemented with your students.

2. We will have coffee, candy, and a variety of yummy snacks available during the event.

3. The winning school will receive a pie party the week of Thanksgiving break. Lots of tasty pies will be available!

What discussion strategies will be shared?

Some of the strategies are a review of ones previously shared over the years, but some will be new! The strategies we'll feature include:

  • Affinity Mapping
  • Concentric Circles
  • Conver-stations
  • Fishbowl Discussions
  • Gallery Walk
  • Hot Seat
  • Let's Generate!
  • No Hands Up
  • Philosophical Chairs
  • Pinwheel Discussions
  • Snowball Discussions
  • Socratic Seminar
  • Turn-and-Talk
  • Where Do You Stand
  • Written Conversation

When you stop by the event, you can peruse various stations to learn about any of the strategies that pique your interest. You can also pick up a 1/2 sheet of paper that briefly describes each strategy and lists potential ideas for implementation. The slips of paper can then be added to a binder ring -- allowing you to walk away with a handy list of discussion strategies that are right at your fingertips!
