The Heart

By: Hallea, Madi, Larissa

Location and Appearance

The heart is a red organ about the size of your fist that is located a little to the left of the center of your chest.

Veins and arteries are also located in the circulatory system. We work together to hand out blood to other organs.

Facts about Me

1. I have four chambers.

2. I am the size of your fist.

3. The average adult heart beats 3,600,000 times a year and 2.5 billion a lifetime.

4. Everyday I create enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles.

5. Grab a tennis ball and squeeze it tightly; thats how hard the beating heart works to pump blood.

My Circulatory System

1. It takes 20 seconds for the red blood cell to circle the body once.

2. Blood that is rich in oxygen appears red.

3. Blood that is poor in oxygen appears blue.

4. Red blood cells live for about 4 months.

5. The blood travels in veins back to the right side of the heart, where it is pumped directly to the lungs.

I am a very IMPORTANT

I am a very important employee of the human body system because I pump the blood that gets distributed to the other organs. If the other organs don't get blood then they wont function correctly because they don't get nutrients or oxygen.

Diseases or Conditions caused by Removal of ME

If you removed the heart from the body, you would die because of loss of blood, not being able to maintain body temperature, the blood would clot, and the brain would not be able to function without blood.

The Definition of the Circulatory System

My system absorbs nutrients from the small intestine and transports them throughout the body. It also circulates oxygen to the body and removes CO2 waste.

Remove Please

The appendix can be removed and it will not affect anything. The appendix produces and protects good germs for the gut by "rebooting" the digestive system. Scientist from Duke University said that the appendix has no function and may be removed at anytime.

I Work With the Muscular System

The heart is made of cardiac muscle and your internal organs are made of smooth muscle.

The muscular system needs the blood that is supplied by the cardiovascular system in order to get the energy to function.

I Work With the Nervous System

The nervous system controls everything that goes on inside the body so the nervous system makes sure the heart is working by sending impulses by neurons to the heart to make it contract.
