Western European music Era Baroque
Music Assignment Module 10
Baroque History
Derived from the Portuguese barroco, or “oddly shaped pearl,” the term “baroque” has been widely used since the nineteenth century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750.
History
During the period, composers and performers used more elaborate musical ornamentation, made changes in musical notation, and developed new instrumental playing techniques. Baroque music expanded the size, range, and complexity of instrumental performance, and also established opera, cantata, oratorio, concerto, and sonata as musical genres. Many musical terms and concepts from this era are still in use today.
Some Characteristic
The most outstanding characteristic of classical music is that the repertoire tends to be written down in musical notation, creating a musical part or score. This score typically determines details of rhythm, pitch, and, where two or more musicians are involved, how the various parts are coordinated.
Instruments
They consist of the instruments found in an orchestra or in a concert band, together with several other solo instruments such as the piano, harpsichord, and organ. The symphony orchestra is the most widely known medium for classical music and includes members of the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion families of instruments.
Wind Instruments
Wind instruments were not overlooked, and before the end of the period, they were altered in order to compete with the strings. In the meantime, the winds were useful for dance music and municipal music meaning their town ceremonies.
Early 1730
By the early 1730's, however, when Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel were producing many of their great works, reaction had set in against the presumed pretentiousness of the elaborate Baroque style, and a premium was placed on simplicity and clarity.
