Quiz Prep
Everything needed
Gases Dissolved In Our Atmosphere:
- carbon dioxide
- sulfur dioxide
- hydrogen chloride
= create an acidic solution in water
carbonic acid--> dissolved carbon dioxide
sulfur dioxide--> "acid rain"
- volcanoes
- industrial pollution
Acid Rain
- kills forests
- pollute water (river, lake, pond)
Sulfuric Acid
discovered by humans in 8th century by alchemist--alchemy "chemistry"
- lead acid battery (cars)
- fertilizers
- steel industry--> prevent rust corrosion
- died fruit products--> hydrotropic
Limestone and Sinkholes
Limestones:
- porous (hold water)
- soft
- soluble in water (carbonic acid)
FL sinkholes occur because:
- lots of limestone
- water underground (aquifers)
- once covered with ocean--> soft calcium deposits (dead animals)
Post Lab of Two Gases Lab
magnesium carbonate and acid
co2 ------> dense gas that sinks
-filled with co2-----> the gas cannot escape
-filled with air------> gas escapes
magnesium and acid
hydrogen--> light gas that rises
-filled with air--> gas escapes
-filled with hydrogen--> gas cannot escape
-flammable gas---> escapes
the "pop"
gas is ignited and rushes out of the test tube
it rubs against the glass and causes friction which produces a sound
Experiment errors
- not waiting 30 seconds
- unstopper before inverting
- break surface water with test tube
- don't collect full test tube of gas
- air bubble in test tube
- stoppers not on tight
- not keeping test tube inverted
Phenol Red
ph indicator
red: basic
clear: acidic
Post Lab of Acidification of Water Lab
- phenol red changes color as you add carbon dioxide to the water
- the carbon dioxide turns to carbonic acid lowering the ph of the water
- calcium tablet is more soluble in the cup with the straw
- because the carbonic acid lowers ph and dissolves calcium faster
- the more acidic something is the more soluble it is
Experimental Errors
- dont bubble water long enough
- 2 culs don't have same amount of water
- lose water when using straw
- put carbon dioxide in two cups
Ocean Acidification
normal ocean ph is 8.1->8.4
- ocean's ph has decreased 0.1 (25%)
- lower ocean ph means sea animals with shells with not be able to make a shell (crabs, shrimp, clams, etc)
- shells made out of calcium
