Aging Well KITV-4: JABSOM and the Hula Heart Study
India and Thailand are on the itinerary for UH Manoa undergraduates thanks to a program run by JABSOM
This year's nine Minority Health International Research Training (MHIRT) program students boarded planes for long flights to their summer research destinations, one group laying over in Seoul (right), still fresh and smiling though. Five students will conduct research in Bangkok, Thailand, while the other four, in pairs of two, will conduct research in Pune and Mysore, India.
JABSOM Tropical Medicine Chair Vivek Nerurkar leads this program for UH undergraduates and says the UH-MHIRT leadership, local and international mentors, department faculty, guest lecturers, support staff, and MHIRT parents and hardworking MHIRT students make every year memorable.
The young scientists report their exploits throughout the summer in newsletters produced by Tropical Medicine, and will present their original research in a public event at JABSOM when they return. Read More.

Small World for 2019 Students in Japan
Drs. Jayden Galamgam and Florence Kan of the University of Hawaiʻi MD Class of 2019 spent a month before graduation studying Global Health at the Jikei University School of Medicine in Japan. What they didn’t know was that they had also been awarded scholarships from the Japanese Student Service Organization. The school set up a special ceremony to present the award to them. Galamgam and Kan were not the only ones tickled pink. So too was JABSOM Anatomy Chair Takashi Matsui, a former colleague Jikei Professor Dr. Satoshi Takeda (pictured at left in the photo).
Pediatrics Resident and Fellow Research
Ten residents and fellows presented their research at the Annual Raul Rudoy, MD, MPH Resident and Fellow Research Day at the University of Hawaiʻi Department of Pediatrics and Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
“Our overarching goal is to encourage and support the residents who do such good work. That’s the goal of the research day and philosophy for the three-year (residency) program,” said Dr. Prashant Purohit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit doctor and Resident Research Director.
