WORLD HELLO DAY
During MEDIA classes this month we celebrated World Hello Day and our multicultural community by decorating paper doves and writing HELLO in the language of your child’s ancestry. These beautiful doves are on display throughout the school. Students learned the World Hello Day Song and the history of this very special holiday, which will be celebrated for the 50th year worldwide on Monday, Nov. 21st. Our ELL students will be kicking off this holiday by sharing a hello in their native language on Monday during the morning announcements. Please see the World Hello Day song on the November choice board located on the Collins homepage.
HOUR OF CODE WEEK DECEMBER 5th
Students in grades K-5 at Collins School will participate in a celebration and exploration of computer science in celebration of Computer Science Week.
What is Computer Science Week?
“The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.” (https://hourofcode.com/us)
At Collins, we will engage in school wide activities and celebrations! The week will kick off with a whole school Drop Everything and Code! Our whole school will engage in coding choice boards together giving the students the opportunity to engage in foundational thinking surrounding computational thinking! Then, during STEAM classes, students will engage in coding stations, both online and offline!
Using computational skills to program machines helps students develop higher order thinking skills in a relevant and interactive manner. The entire week will be a great success. We are thankful, in advance, for the students’ enthusiasm and willingness to try something new! If you would like to come learn as well, join us on Wednesday 12/7/22 from 7-8:30 at Harrison school for a family night of code! More information and registration to follow!
PLEASE REMEMBER
Parents please make sure your children have all their items in the AM. This includes computers, lunches, snacks, instruments, folders, etc. The office has been a little too busy lately :)
